I would definitely consider it but friend I must ask - how essential are these things ? My experience with the og tags has been mixed. Not every site needs a social media rich intro kind of thing. And I do wonder about a few of the later suggestions about the rel me 's - would I need that for every project?
#
[morgan]
Tldr before I rant too much - I would love to include signposts for more things but I want to be limited in what I include in my zip file 🗄️
#
[morgan]
Like I'm pretty happy with the title tag being set and a meta description, a favicon - stuff I include. The rest seems less essential to my little project

I personally wouldn't include OGP placeholders like that. Certainly not Twitter's flavor of them, but overall, just too much invisible content that people are likely to miss updating, or need to remove.
#
gRegor
For rel-me links, some example documentation of adding them to visible links would be nice.
#
gRegor
I feel like the favicon could be simplified to one variant
#
gRegor
what is favicon
#
Loqi
A favicon is a convention for websites to provide an icon for browsers to display in bookmarks, favorites, history, and other places they show or list URLs https://indieweb.org/favicon
#
gRegor
what is manifest
#
Loqi
A manifest or app manifest is a file that provides information about a web app, like name, description, icons, developer/author https://indieweb.org/manifest
#
gRegor
I'm not too familiar, so would be interested in a Why section on that wiki page^
#
gRegor
Is `site.webmanifest` meant to be `manifest.json`?
#
gRegor
Put some placeholder sections on https://indieweb.org/manifest if anyone with more experience wants to update/add themselves

Here's that post about the new (and forthcoming?) `<geolocation>` tag - https://matuzo.at/blog/2026/geolocation-element (ties in with the thing we've seen a fair amount on pages asking us to share location via JS)
#
gRegor
Thanks!
#
gRegor
I can see that being nice because if you use the geolocation API directly and don't wait for an explicit user interaction to request location, Google will (rightly) ding you in search results.

Hah, fun 404 on this sudoku game site. "404 Puzzle Not Found" with "404" in a sudoku grid. Example: https://sudokupad.app/1234abcd
#
gRegor
what is 404
#
Loqi
404 is an HTTP/1.1 Status Code returned from a web server to signify that the requested URI was not found https://indieweb.org/404
#
[tantek]
Agreed, for most cases there's no need for any OG or TwitterCards. The link preview page describes why and how
#
[tantek]
What is link preview
#
Loqi
A link preview is what posts show about one or more embedded links, like a headline, image, and/or summary from the link destination https://indieweb.org/link-preview

gRegor is /manifest not the same as /Web_App_Manifest ? Which already has an how-to as well as indieweb examples
#

[artlung] the geolocation element looks really interesting.
#
capjamesg
I like the idea of a declarative element for requesting permissions.
#
capjamesg
It looks like the CG responsible has also been exploring implementations for video/audio permissions: https://github.com/WICG/PEPC/blob/main/explainer.md

Still wish these were button `type` values (e.g. `<button type="geolocation">`), but the privacy implications (and subsequent styling restrictions) do make more sense as to why it's a standalone element now. Not surprised it's a good article, but still, good article 😄

gregorlove[d] I'm having trouble signing into IndieBookClub after setting up IndieAuth/Micropub on my site: roadlessread.com which passes all checks but the IndieLogin part fails with this error [Request Error: There was a problem with the parameters of this request. This client_id is not registered https://indielogin.com/id)] Sorry for the bother, just wondering if I'm doing something wrong?

My reasoning for some of the boilerplate choices is basically to ask oneself what is a sensible minimum for making a web page feel complete and for things like save web page to home screen a manifest is good to start with. It's about not feeling incomplete, rather than trying to do all the meta tag and og graph things
#
gRegor
Reposting since I was in the wrong channel, and for logs: Zegnat, Ah good catch! I didn't see the (likely?) duplicate page. Sounds like we could merge/redirect /manifest into it

[morgan]
I'll find the right manifest page on the wiki and expand it a little sometime in coming days
#
gRegor
[morgan], Understandable. Maybe you could include a minimal manifest.json and the documentation can have a snippet of HTML if they want to add it?
#
Zegnat
I was not sure about the context of the chat scrollback. So did not want to assume that I could merge the two. But if it sounds like the same to you too, I would definitely vote yes to a merging
#
Zegnat
Which name to make canonical I have no opinion on

The post above made me aware that IndieBookClub exists! And then I signed in and was really happy with the Auth screen I built for my own IndieAuth server.

Looks great!

You could add your example with screenshot to https://indieweb.org/consent_screen

That reminds me I should check what my consent screen shows for the URL. Ideally I think it should get `client_uri` from the ID document and show that instead of https://indiebookclub.biz/id

Ha! Saw this on HN: CSS came in dead last in a ranking of boilerplate code.
#
[Al_Abut]
Ok so it’s a homebrew test and not at all fair, since so much of stylesheets are repetitive by design, but it does capture the Groundhog’s Day feeling of frontend work.

One main thing which makes HTML5 BP project quite enduringly useful imo is how easy it is to ✂️ trim what you don't need. But then I found myself using it a bunch and consistently trimming a few things over and over so I figured I'd make my own little distro
#
[morgan]
The ideaa I have are really basic things which make for good boilerplate are like `<title></title>` like of course I want to fill in my own website title there, thank you boilerplate for guiding me. And I'll add more to the manifest page on the wiki but if people save your app to home screen for that glimmer of app like experience you want it to have a good name and icon and not look janky. But parcel? Build system? Bundling less than like
#
[morgan]
150kb of a total project? Let's ✂️ that
#
gRegor
I'm not certain manifest.json is needed to add a site to your home screen though. I've done with with indie sites before and it uses thee favicon
#
[morgan]
Good Instinct, it could potentially be done without, but for me it's still a good placeholder. Interested to see what the favicon looks like in the app icon
