!tell quarter Hey, welcome to IW! Cool site! Just wanted to say, it looks like the www. link for your site that you posted in the main channel isn’t properly redirecting to the main domain. Might want to set that up in your DNS if you prefer.

Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

i've been thinking about making m own static site generator
#
WinnerWind
the question then becomes, WHY and what might I use
#
WinnerWind
i'd do it in python, because i'm most familiar with it, and output HTML directly, but that sounds really really painful
#
[KevinMarks]
Have you looked at jinja2 templates? I like those for python
#
WinnerWind
i dont even know what htat is, haha
#
WinnerWind
oh interesting, it looks cool
#
[KevinMarks]
It's pretty powerful and flexible. I do sometimes end up writing a bit too much logic in the template rather than the code

Beautiful
#
[artlung]
fun - with no content, in safari, it shrinks to be narrow.
#
[tantek]
How about with a min-width?
#
[artlung]

#
[artlung]
also grows horizontally with content if no width is set. (presumably [cols] could do it too). Definitely a nice tool. And I too have implemented the "auto sizing" nonsense in the past.

Cool thing I did yesterday. I rewrote my static site generator to generate single pages at a time from markdown files, and generate any dependent pages for the page type. That way for my notes feed page [1] I can write a note and just generate the note permalink + an entry in the feed page instead of regenerating the whole site.
#
NegateThis
In addition to this, so that I wouldn't have to constantly SSH into my VPS just to write a note, I created an XMPP bot that I can message to create a new note. It will automatically create an md file, run the SSG, and send webmentions to federate the note over Bridgy Fed

That's way cooler than the XMPP access we had to tweet back in the day

[tantek]: What do you mean?
#
[tantek]
NegateThis, you used to be able to add an xmpp:twitter@... to your XMPP client and that would turn your XMPP client into a Twitter feed reader and posting client!
#
[tantek]
plus they added an XMPP stream of the firehose back in the day too! https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/a/2008/twitter-and-xmpp-drinking-from-the-fire-hose

Twitter << Feature: support [[XMPP]] for reading your feed, tweeting, and for their firehose as well: https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/a/2008/twitter-and-xmpp-drinking-from-the-fire-hose

ok, I added "Feature: support [[XMPP]] for reading your feed, tweeting, and for their firehose as well: https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/a/2008/twitter-and-xmpp-drinking-from-the-fire-hose" to the "See Also" section of /Twitter https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=109448&oldid=102971
#
NegateThis
Oh wow exposing the firehose as an XMPP stream is pretty cool. No way you could do that now. I'm sure it'd be possible to do this with ActivityPub or ATProto but there's not much interest in XMPP

I guess CKEditor doesn't really understand HTML. Which is why it keeps inserting elements that I don't want, and that the markup's content model says I don't need. And messing up the page. CKEditor--

NegateThis back in 2010 I believe there were some XMPP proponents that were proposing XMPP as the basis for a federated/distributed social network, I think it was one of the talks at FSWS2010
#
[tantek]
What was FSWS2010
#
Loqi
The Federated Social Web Summit was an annual event from 2010-2012 https://indieweb.org/FSWS2010
#
[tantek]
Yep found it. buddycloud(.com) - was a social network based on connecting with your XMPP identity and server: https://web.archive.org/web/20100727190128/http://buddycloud.com/

I think it kinda died because there were no permalinks to posts, a fundamental weakness in chat-based social protocols.

@btrem interested to hear what CKEditor is doing. Been using it for years, never run into any problems, but also barely touched the config (and use it via a plugin wrapper, so not sure how much might be getting automagically solved for me)

it was great when used as part of something, like with Twitter. it was not great when it was used as the *basis* for something
