SYN floods for the last few days. A small Caribbean nation might be blocked from my server before this night is out.
#
[Kupietz]
Ah, the joys of self-hosting.

4.5 days until Gregorian 4/10 — HTTP 410 — Remember all the web pages and sites which are GONE https://indieweb.org/410

returns status code 200 XD

and not even a `<meta http-equiv="Status" content="410 Gone" />`
#
[Kupietz]
Yeah, guys, that's not an actual 410 error. That's just the html template it uses. The 410 happens in .htaccess.
#
[tantek]
[Kupietz] do you have an opinion about the meta http-equiv status is an HTML extension?
#
[tantek]
*as an HTML extension
#
[Kupietz]
I do not, as yet; I'm not familiar with it, but will have a look. Right this minute I'm actually in the thick of finishing up a slack bot to alert me to SYN floods, then dinner is next priority, but I'll take a look at that later on.
#
[Kupietz]
Always appreciate the technical heads up.
#
[tantek]
ah no worries, no rush. take your time at your convenience!
#
[tantek]
enjoy the weekend 🙂
#
[Kupietz]
Plus now I get to say, "You know, the other day, when the head of Standards at Mozilla was advising me on my website..."
#
[Kupietz]
Yes, I just said I was working on a slack bot... that _is_ enjoying my weekend! 😄
#
[tantek]
lol to the "advising", not the enjoying your weekend. we all have our joyful hobbies!
#
[artlung]
Today I learned there's a web framework called fresh. https://fresh.deno.dev
#
[artlung]
This is the kind of thing that will keep me doing FrESH until the framework is defunct.
#
[Kupietz]
Lol, yeah. Hope you're having a great weekend too, [tantek].
#
[Kupietz]
[tantek] Question, are the status messages standardized across languages? For instance, does a web server in Spain still return "410 Gone"? I'm curious what the reasoning is behind requiring a value beginning with a number and a space, rather than just accepting a number like "410" by itself, since those are standard and don't change.
#
[Kupietz]
[artlung] Whoa. That's like when Frank Zappa discovered Francesco Zappa.
#
[Kupietz]
SYN Flood alert bot is up and running. These are a test trigger, will show attacking IPs if I get a flood.

[Kupietz] yes low level protocols and formats have by convention in IETF and W3C standardized on US English terminology

Well, that said, seems like a sensible proposal to me – The database dev in me says not to use a numeric identifier and a text string where a standardized numeric identifier aline would suffice, but, I assume you must have your reasons for that. And other than that, seems like an edge case that does need handling, and like a sensible way to handle it.

The case of my little 410 template that I showed you is kind of a corner case, as it’s not a webpage, it’s an HTML fragment without a html, head, or body tags, but it’s really designed only to be served in the course of returning an actual 410 header from Apache, not accessed directly, so I don’t think it’s a concern.

is anyone else watching the official NASA Artemis live feed and seeing the ordered list on the left, timeline on top, and image in the main content area and wondering how to make this with HTML+CSS?
#
[tantek]
the ordered list in particular has a mix of numbered and lowercase lettered items
#
[tantek]
like 1. 2. 3. 4. a., 5. 6. b. etc. no indentation.
#
[artlung]
remove the paddings and margins and use type="1" and type="a" and use nesting, probably. but not watching.
#
[tantek]
except nesting would imply a semantic which is not there. it's more like two interlaced lists

[artlung]
oh nice. it's a sequence. the letters not resetting is to prevent miscommunication and ambiguity
#
[tantek]
also this is what I call an awesome realtime timeline indicator in multiple dimensions
#
[capjamesg]
Oooh where are you seeing that feed?
#
[tantek]
capjamesg, youtube link in #indieweb-cafe
#
[tantek]
they just switched back to moon view
#
[artlung]
doing that in CSS would be a mistake. It's adjacent to the reason legal opinions and cases are advised not to let browser engines render the numbers in legal documents. not trustworthy enough.
#
[tantek]
now the SCIENCE desk. can take this to #indieweb-cafe or #indieweb-random too
#
[artlung]
so, you set the value in each list item
#
[tantek]
yeah I agree with that [artlung]
#
[capjamesg]
Wait really re: numbers in legal docs?
#
[artlung]
I feel like we talked about this in a FrESH but can't find it right off.

Need a version of that dashboard for my next multi hour roadtrip with friends including points of interest, driving shifts etc
#
[tantek]
Could also be a cool view on a year archive of travel posts with events/conferences as the points of interest
#
[tantek]
Anyone notice how the "moon landscape" content area is effectively displaying encoding three dimensions in a 2d display? (2d map + time)

AAA still provides paper TripTiks, I believe. A fine way to navigate.

My favorite thing when I was on the road was the maps. Will say more in #indieweb-random.
