Does anyone have any intuition for why a Sqlite database might take 10x longer to do a SELECT query but only every so often?
#
[capjamesg]
I have indexes set up and the query response time can be as low as 0.1s.
#
[capjamesg]
But some times it takes multiple seconds.

I am using Flask as my web server so I may need to figure out if a connection limit is being hit or something.

I haven’t run into this before though so I thought I’d ask!

[capjamesg] I'm not a DB expert but that sounds like some slow process is blocking. What you are describing reminds me of the effect garbage collection or a thread blocking process might have in application performance.

I wonder if there's something re-indexing or some other kind of periodic process

also [capjamesg] what are you measuring? db query time? HTTP request handling time on the server? on the client? other?

Hey [snarfed], sorry to bug you, but I'm curious... today at 2:54 PST I published https://michaelkupietz.com/?p=33354 with a webmention to bridgy fed. It did turn up on my bluesky at https://bsky.app/profile/michaelkupietz.com.web.brid.gy/post/3mjie4e6l54z2 but doesn't appear on my BF profile at https://fed.brid.gy/web/michaelkupietz.com. Meanwhile, moments after that, I made some edits to a three-week old page at

https://michaelkupietz.com/?p=29170, and seems like every time I update it (which is frequent, it's my "latest news" page), it moves back to the top of my BF profile list, although the log correctly says "seen this before" and it doesn't get pushed out to Bsky. Curious why the former doesn't show in the profile and the latter does... only if you have the time and inclination to have a look. Thanks.

hey [Kupietz], sorry for the trouble! the first part looks like a bug on our end, we need to handle post URLs on the root path with query params better

[snarfed] No trouble at all on this end, just thought it might be worth looking into.

Heh. I may have said this before, but a lot of the services I'm involved with know me as the annoying client who always manages to find the edge cases.

combination of finding edge cases and actually reporting them. out of 10 users who hit bugs or rough edges, maybe one reports them, if you're lucky. the rest just churn 😢
