I had no idea this algorithm existed. But it's great. https://danq.me/2026/05/31/iso-country-codes-to-flags/

[tantek]
ok that's pretty cool. danq++

oh yeah, been doing that in http://www.indent.me. careful, Windows (still?) doesn't show emoji flags.
#
[pcarrier]
http://www.ident.me sorry
#
[tantek]
no worries, looks like it's just a GoDaddy squat domain for sale
#
[pcarrier]
who wants to be indented anyway
#
[pcarrier]
(I work for http://indent.com hence the now rather frequent typo)
#
[tantek]
Python likes to be indented ;)

Very cool re: the flags! Just in case people weren't aware, though: Best not to use flags for languages. Mostly because languages used don't always reflect borders and in some cases can be a reminder of nasty history, or risk erasure of minority/original languages, or express some sort of cultural dominance.
#
[rose]
[capjamesg] that's a lovely site.
#
[rose]
And lovely zines! I first just admired the Web design though!

[Rose]: it's nice to have a visual/icon to more easily browse a long list of languages though, especially since language names are different in different languages -- what would you recommend?
#
[rose]
The industry standard (I'm a translator, too) is to use two-letter language ISO codes. You can also use the full language name in that language, or three letter codes where the language is ambiguous.
#
spinningarrow
the trouble with ISO codes is expecting that the average user knows them, which isn't often the case
#
spinningarrow
full language name in that language makes sense intuitively, however it isn't keyboard friendly for languages with a non-latin script
#
[rose]
I am forever amused by English speakers saying that to be honest! We always know the one we actually need to view the content in a language we speak.
#
spinningarrow
surely that's an over generalization? (I don't know the ISO code for the other languages I speak, and especially not for my native one)
#
[rose]
We don't need to know them all for it to be usable, just the ones we need. Every German knows DE...
#
[rose]
For unusual languages, writing it out is better.
#
[rose]
Using flags risks offending potential customers. It's also, frankly, politically regressive so not something I'd want to do anyway.
#
spinningarrow
I agree, just wondering what a better visual alternative is
#
spinningarrow
I doubt my parents know the ISO code for any of their native languages
#
[rose]
The British flag and US flag both get used for English. Both flags instill fear and negative associations. My dad mentioned just now disliking seeing the US flag.
#
spinningarrow
I'm with you 100% on the flags, languages are much less flag-bound than most websites think
#
[rose]
There's a strong case for just using the language in full. Or do indeed have it as a flag and/or country name, but then do have other languages for multilingual countries.
#
[rose]
But the trouble there is you end up committing to doing Swiss French, when they are going to be happy enough reading International French...
#
spinningarrow
yeah
#
spinningarrow
on the other hand - depending on the business/website - having Swiss French could indicate a much more local touch
#
[rose]
May also vary by languages offered. I do DE, FR, EN on multilingual sites. Little buttons.
#
[rose]
Absolutely! I made a multilingual site for a Swiss French translator!
#
[rose]
Just when people promise something and don't deliver it... That is very frustrating.

I noticed some big brands have like a mini site thing or a huge modal pop up to help people pick. For some sectors I think that's best, especially when you have different market offerings by country, too.
#
spinningarrow
Yes I've been reading this just now which has a decent summary: https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2022/05/designing-better-language-selector/
#
[rose]
But yeah Switzerland is a good example. They'd be using foreign country flags for the three main languages. Related, people suggested using the Irish flag for English when the UK left the EU. That's frankly really offensive to Gaelic speakers - the ultimate cultural erasure. (for context, I'm British born and naturalised German)
#
spinningarrow
Many websites implement the country selector in an annoying way though e.g. IKEA obviously has English versions of their text but in many countries if you want to see the local selection, you don't have the option of choosing English for that country
#
[rose]
I like the Dell and Cisco options.
#
[rose]
And yeah, though the Ikea example is complex cos they don't stock identical ranges. I know this having recommended things to my parents and found they aren't available! But I agree - it's utterly silly because who needs quick cheap furniture? Immigrants...!
#
[rose]
I hate auto redirection... But it is part of how I learned passive Dutch. 😂 But yeah I've experienced so many weird redirects and things. It's weirder and worse in the Netherlands than Germany I think. Smaller country problems? That or I don't notice it so much in Germany. I have still had some websites redirect me to the UK site when I'm in German and don't care what language the content is in... Despite having the right browser settings!
#
[rose]
The article is right about redirects.
#
[rose]
I think respecting language preferences with an appropriate redirect is fine, though, as long as you retain an easy means to switch, ideally above the fold. Because sometimes people use borrowed devices.

thamara_k[d] , to override the Discuss font, you can target the widget with CSS. This is better as your website would already be loading the custom font. Adding font customisation via Discuss admin would result in an extra fetch. Here's an example:
#
kenomatik
```#Discuss-comments {
#
kenomatik
font-family: 'Inter', sans-serif;
#
IWDiscord
<kenomatik>
btw best not edit messages on here as this chat is bridged across several services and editing causes entire messages to be sent twice
#
Oh okay. Hope it's working. Didn't know about the edit. Will keep in mind.
#
No problem. Targeting the div id didn't actually work, but I managed to get everything by targeting the classes separately and using !important
the letter algorithm for flags is trickier for the UK You can use GB for the union flag, but you want GBWLS GBENG and GBSCO for Wales, England and Scotland respectively, done with a black flag and letters in the E00xx range
#
[KevinMarks]
There isn't a Northern Ireland flag
#
[KevinMarks]
It would be GBNIR if there was one
Makes me curious if other countries have similar characteristics. US States? Canadian provinces?
#
[KevinMarks]
󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿You could define second-level ones for US states, but that would take some lobbying to implement.
#
[artlung]
US state flags have less overall relevance to the wider world, than, say, UK areas. Though I certainly am a fan of my own state, California's flag.
#
[KevinMarks]
well, UK nations - you could have county flags too - Northumberland's is bold https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northumberland#Flag
Everybody's got flags. Most “big” cities do
thamara_k[d]: Just got off work. The override failed because the comment's css loads after your website's css is loaded. Pull Discuss `v0.3.0` from main now. Added a css property `--discuss-font-family`. I feel this is a cleaner override.
#
kenomatik
Sorry my bad. `v0.3.3`.
could anybody here benefit from a service helping with local development of oauth login flows / webhooks, or are you generally satisfied setting up tunnels / whatever you do?
kenomatik[d] oh great thanks. I also added a bunch of stuff to override Tailwind in the UI, and to make sure it's dynamically repainted with my dark/light mode toggle.
I suspect it was originally in CVS and that at some point an import script was run that preserved the dates
seems to be it, their website mentions CVS too
they didn't cheat the commit timestamps, but this is 34-year-old code 😉
got some good work done. managed to write some really basic HTML and CSS for my website that im somewhat content with. Now i gotta make macros and stuff to make the webdev stuff easier. And also fonts and stuff..... making a static site doesn't require as much stuff as I thought it would.
#
kenomatik
thamara_k[d]: No problem. It actually helps others too. It needs to be as customizable as possible. Btw, the dark/light mode switch should work ideally. If there's a `dark` class on `html` or `body` or any ancestors it shud automatically work.
indeed. https://cgit.git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/emacs.git/commit/?id=ce5584125c4 should serve the first commit.
