Is there an html input tag attribute that can request a downscaled version of a photo from the client? Seems like it could be a useful feature

If anybody objects to the site content I will immediately remove it

aaronpk, do you have a specific use-case in mind? I don't know about "downscaled", however I could see a user wanting to upload a custom "thumbnail" (of lower resolution or cropped) when uploading a photo
#
aaronpk
My phone takes huge photos, and I really don't need a 10mb 27megapixel photo on my website, so every time I upload a photo I go into the photo app UI and choose a downscaled version
#
aaronpk
Uploading a 2mb photo is still good enough quality for me and uploads a ton faster
#
aaronpk
Which is particularly relevant when I'm traveling and have limited data plan or signal
#
[tantek]
Who should make the decision that a "2mb photo is good enough"?
#
[tantek]
Like is this something the site should communicate explicitly in markup (either "good enough" or a size/resolution limit?)

Or is it something the user should always have the option to do in the browser, like in the file picker dialog, choose from a popup to opt-in downsize or downscale a selected image file?
#
[tantek]
I can see arguments for both / either
#
[tantek]
In the latter case, no markup needed, that's more of a browser UI feature request (also reasonable)

sorry if this seems like a newbie question, but how does someon creates a "webring"? I assume that you curate a txt file of firendly websites and then use some javascript to direct your visitors to one of them randomly, right?

Newbie questions are always okay here!

[capjamesg]
What is a webring?
#
Loqi
A webring is a collection of websites linked together in a circular structure; check out the indiewebring, a webring across IndieWeb sites and blogs https://indieweb.org/webring
#
[capjamesg]
This page may help you ^^
#
[capjamesg]
A webring is a ring because all the sites link to each other.
#
[capjamesg]
Usually webrings have a form that you can fill out to join, although some groups of friends have webrings exclusive to them too.
#
turalyon
Oh I see, so I could create my own webring by displaying a form and inviting others to submit their websites? I guess I should manually approve to not to let any NSFW content or risky stuff like porn etc
#
turalyon
I need to rollout a backend for my website, I've been postponing it during so much time haha
#
turalyon
Thanks for the explanation

I like that when I sharing a photo by email in iOS I get asked what size image I want to send.

[aaronpk] There‘s the reduced data preference, but it's sadly not widely supported. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/Reference/At-rules/@media/prefers-reduced-data

[jeremycherfas] could you share/upload a screenshot of that UI for picking the size?
#
[capjamesg]
I do wish that preference were supported.
#
[jeremycherfas]
Sorry, rushing out, unable to wiki, but please free to use any way you choose.
#
[tantek]
That looks very cool. I'd maybe blur the domain but yeah worth uploading
#
[tantek]
aaronpk ^ would that option in a file image upload dialog work for your usecase?

This is an interesting explanation of why atproto is Web-shaped https://overreacted.io/there-are-no-instances-in-atproto/

That size dialogue is like the Flickr one. It also reminds me of QuickTime that had export options labelled "web" "CD-Rom" and something along the lines of "TV"

!tell artlung I think the h-card on your indienews bookmark got messed up. Not a problem for the newsletter, it shows up fine, but I saw in the stream channel it shared your bookmark without your name attached https://php.microformats.io/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fartlung.com%2Findienews%2F1836993ab4858d723762dd46fd9e9a83

turalyon: https://indiewebify.me has some validator tools that will walk you through adding the h-card markup to your site. It's pretty cool, and h-cards can be as simple as one `a href`
#
gRegor
What is h-card?
#
Loqi
h-card is the microformats2 vocabulary for marking up people, organizations, and venues on web sites, and supersedes hCard https://indieweb.org/h-card

gRegor for bookmarked indienews posts I consciously chose to remove anything smacking of author metadata. I don't want any potential misinterpretation of a claim of authorship.

There's a stray h-card in there still, though it just has site contents, nothing about you
#
gRegor
Though indienews is good about diffentiating author of the bookmark post vs what's being bookmarked
#
gRegor
Ah, not as the author. I see what you mean.
