I love python so much. I'm using a makedirs() in my program with the exist_ok=True flag which doesn't crash the program if the directory already exists
#
WinnerWind
today the program crashed and the error message? "The directory already exists"
#
WinnerWind
it even went through the trouble of telling me where the error was

@chr0m4 - hope the talk with the tutor went okay! I meant to ask - how is it, running your own mastodon instance? I was considering it... I own http://sustyweb.dev and the longer-term objective is to make it a sort of community project, but led by myself and two friends (Nick Lewis and Siddhesh Wagle). But it would be cool to create a mastodon instance where we could also find each other...

@WinnerWind nice! I sort of ended up getting more into node cos of it being more efficient and a bit better for scraping. That sounds worse than it is - I use it for various transformation of my own existing content, analysis, stuff like that. 🙂 It's also why I don't tend to share anything I made like that, though, since I don't want to make things any easier for plagiarists!

[rose]: well, apparently the kiddo is being called some racial slur at the school, and obviously she is answering back and getting physical sometimes so xD I was literally telling to the tutor: "What do you expect my kid to do under that circumstance?"
#
[rose]
Urghh... I was bullied at school, too. I f*cking hate kids and teachers who blame the victim.

on hosting Mastodon, girlonthemoon: was right, use gotosocial, I cannot use it anymore, because Mastodon and GoToSocial (as hosting) are not compatible because of some sort of cryptographic stuff that Mastodon executes when you fire your instance for the first time. What I'm gonna do is to buy a object-storage bucket from Hertzner (6$ for 1TB) and download a backup from Masto.host and plug it into my VPS
#
chr0m4
I go from 22$ to 15$, which is neat
#
chr0m4
never use masto.host, they're making themselves rich at our expense, literally
#
[pcarrier]
they seem affordably priced
#
[pcarrier]
what's wrong with their business?
#

#
chr0m4
who did you guys set your avatar here? xD
#
[pcarrier]
what is chat names
#
Loqi
The chat names page is for IndieWeb community members to to add their commonly used nicknames on discussion channels, optionally with icons, sorted by nickname with their website and usual timezone(s) https://indieweb.org/chat-names
#
chr0m4
:pcarrier the cheap plan is worth nothing, you have to scale in less than 1 week, there are only 3 users in my instance and storage was depleted in a couple of days because they manage the instance poorly
#
[rose]
I'm confused - so Mastodon isn't compatible with whatever you were using...? For object storage, http://intercolo.de is also sustainable and even cheaper. S3 compatible.
#
chr0m4
Because Mastodon “account migration” only works reliably between servers that fully implement Mastodon’s Move/Redirect protocols, and GoToSocial’s support is partial/different.
#
chr0m4
So some data (followers, posts history, relationships) can’t be transferred cleanly, which forces a “restart” rather than a true migration.
#
chr0m4
From a post I read, basically you lose everything
#
chr0m4
This is like your starter pokemon, the choice matters
#
chr0m4
don't be foolish like me xD, I started to host mastodon without researching enough
#
chr0m4
[rose]: intercolo looks promising, 1 eur less, worth it, that compounds month to month
#
[rose]
Yeah if you pay in advance for three years, even less.

I created a small firefox extensions that checks the korean dictionary to popup with the meaning of the word, super helpful given that I still have lots to learn: https://streamable.com/evv26c
#
[rose]
@chr0m4 I just did some reading - now I see what you mean. Go to social is a lot more efficient than Mastodon... But yeah, migration issues.
#
[rose]
Nice tool! Do you think you could adjust it to work with other languages? I'd find that useful for Dutch or French.
#
chr0m4
sure, I want the user to be able to input an url to their favorite dictionary page and provide the url interpolation format! right now Im just opening an iframe from naver dictionary but I guess it can work with anything that has an online dictionary
#
chr0m4
yeah [rose]: gotosocial is written in Go, Mastodon in ruby, I love ruby but it's not very efficient tbh
#
[rose]
cool! does require the source to allow iframes though.
#
chr0m4
yup, I need to whitelist those sources

[rose]: see what I told you
#
chr0m4
it's crazy language
#
[rose]
😄 I can see how it's especially funky when you speak Spanish and English, which follow similar logic.
#
[rose]
German's different grammar can also cause some weird things when people speak English with German grammar... or even vice versa. It's part of why I speak English to my husband and he speaks German back, all the time, to ensure I am not influenced by weird English, and don't switch my thinking language permanently over to German.
#
[rose]
I'm biased on the quirky grammar, though - I really like Turkish grammar. So I'm not "fixed" on my main languages having the best grammar if that makes sense. 😄
#
[rose]
Ekmek nerede? Bread where? = where is the bread.

Yes(h)il zeytin var-ma? - green olives are there? = do you have green olives? (Turkish characters are hard to type on this keyboard, so this is a bit of an approximation.)

It has vowel harmonisation so everything sounds like poetry.
#

RE: iframes, I mean it the other way around. Like, some sites will have a CSP to prevent their use in iframes.
#
[rose]
what is content security policy
#
Loqi
Content-Security-Policy (abbreviated CSP) is an HTTP directive that a site can use to restrict what external resources are retrieved by a browser, to mitigate some XSS and injection attacks https://indieweb.org/Content-Security-Policy
#
[rose]
I've been plagiarised and had weird 'imitation' attacks where people have claimed I am in their employ when I'm not - so I'm pretty strict on that stuff.
#
chr0m4
ah yes, the old trick of styling an iframe and misguide the users to trick them into thinking they´re visiting a website that is not the one they wanted to visit
#
chr0m4
certainly, it depends on if they have CSP or not
#
chr0m4
turkish seem very alient too 😶

The funny thing is, I was also just thinking that I haven’t heard from my Uptime-Kuma in a long while, much longer than usual, and now I reckon it has been missing in action for weeks. Busy investigating.

🤣 Maybe I need actually to understand what I am doing with Docker instead of blithely following orders. Or give up on Docker. Except that when it works, it is magic.
#
[rose]
😄 I mean, some things benefit from containerisation, others don't. Depends what they are doing. When it's more about the convenience of installation than security, I tend to put it on the host instead.
#
[rose]
A thing I feel like a lot of people forget is that unless you are regularly rebuilding containers (and some really are designed to set and forget), you might wanna update the OS within that container between rebuilds. That's what I do, regularly.
#
[rose]
There are so many zero day weird things going on these days thanks to AI, it feels like we need to be a bit more careful.
#
[jeremycherfas]
I do container maintenance so infrequently it is always a hassle to remember what to do and in what order. Next time I’ll try and write down the step by step, and more importantly the reasons for each step.

+1 for automating update tasks. I wrote a CLI script to copy a database from a production server to my pc, un-compress it, drop the database from the dev server I run, and loading the production db. Nice to be able to type sync_site and get the latest production site on my dev server.

Has anyone played around with javascript temporal? I thought I'd drop Luxon and Nunjucks date filter from my 11ty/node project, but I can't figure out where to begin.
#
[artlung]
btrem discussion of specifically how luxon and Temporal might interact: https://github.com/moment/luxon/discussions/970
#
btrem
[artlung]: the thing, I don't need to parse dates (11ty does that for me with content dates), and I don't do much date arithmetic. I only need to output a date object as a string, e.g., `<time datetime="{{ page.date | njkDate('YYYY-MM-DD') }}">{{ page.date | njkDate('MMMM D, YYYY') }}</time>`.
#
btrem
Or `DateTime.fromJSDate(date).toFormat("yyyy/MM")`.
#
btrem
I wonder if I'm missing the point. :-/
#
[rose]
[jeremycherfas] 😄 I like the wording of stretch goal. Nah, it's more like... I am terrible at remembering the exact order of certain command sequences, so I make CLI scripts to make it easier for myself! 😄
#
[artlung]
I'm firmly in the “if it's working then I am unexcited to swap out for new hotness” camp.
#
[artlung]
But rock on if you wish.
#
[rose]
Just come back here after putting together an extensive JSON structure for this project I'm working on. Curious - are there good, user-friendly, independent JSON editor tools I could guide the client to if appropriate? I'm using VS Code with a JS Editor extension and they can use the browser to take a look, but if anyone has any tips - please share!

It's working. I suppose I /should/ leave well-enough alone. But also, 11ty and javascript date handling is frustrating. So I'm hoping for something better.

I suppose my question is, how does one format a string from a temporal object?
#
btrem
What I've read so far is how to construct a temporal object, and how to manipulate them. But not how to output them for a web page.
