[social] I started using PHP in 3.2 in early 2000, moving what we built off perl and an experiment with ColdFusion.
#
lecaseus Hiya, just a quick unrelated question, do personal sites have a sitemap html, xml, or both?
#
lecaseus I currently have both in mine but I’m thinking of removing the xml since I don’t really care much for crawler discoverability
#
[artlung] Personal sites, and all sites, can have either or both or neither. https://indieweb.org/sitemap goes into detail about how folks treat site maps.

[Trevor_Morris] [artlung] it seems you have a PHP error on https://artlung.com/firehose/

WinnerWind i personally dont have a sitemap because i think that my website is intuitive enough with the new design, so i could gut it out entirely. all the other parts of my site are purely for personal use, so they dont need to be part of the sitemap
#
thamara_k kenomatik[d]++ new version of Discuss up and running. I haven't done any styling yet but all looks straightforward, I will look at it over the next few days.

Zegnat I think the way the default for strikethrough is the line starting together with the letter obfuscates it a bit on the first letter, e.g. on the "s" here: https://zegnat.bearblog.dev/shorts-are-videos-but-videos-are-not-shorts-more-youtube-urls/
#
[capjamesg] Yeah, it is neat!
#
[capjamesg] The video mentions using text decoration to put a line above text. I wonder what use cases that has.
#
[capjamesg] Or whether said use cases are primarily aesthetic.
#
[pcarrier] any small free service you wish existed but couldn't find? ;)
#
[artlung] many uses for overlines. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overline
#
[capjamesg] [pcarrier] Not necessarily a service but I wish I could have a private blog that only friends could see.
#
[pcarrier] [capjamesg] sounds well within your technical means, what's holding you back?

[capjamesg] [pcarrier] I have implemented it but I’m never sure if people would read…
#
[capjamesg] It feels then more like a social/culture thing to think about than engineering now that I consider it.
#
[pcarrier] the interesting stuff 🙂 IDK I'd read more my network's private posts as long as there's a feed or mailing list (I'd probably lean toward the latter personally)

WinnerWind did something really bold. Wrote a few proxy functions for my static site generator so that the static site author can make network requests from within Jinja templates. As an example, I made it render an XKCD comic using an ID. (The source content contains

[schmarty] it's possible that i really dislike the new PHP URI/URL APIs!!! specifically, the WhatWG implementation sounds good for IndieWeb projects because it is "mostly relevant in the web browser context" and "deals with URLs, rather than URIs."
#
[schmarty] however, the WhatWG implementation doesn't decode percent-encoded strings in any parts of URLs except the hostname, which seems like it's passing the buck on normalizing some goofy urls? https://wiki.php.net/rfc/url_parsing_api#basic_examples
#
[schmarty] (compared there with the RFC 3986 implementation, which handles URIs and not just URLs and therefore is more loosey-goosey overall, doesn't support unicode, but _does_ normalize percent-encoded strings)
