[aciccarello] I have a POC for adding an IndieNews syndicator to indiekit but would like feedback on the API. https://github.com/getindiekit/indiekit/pull/880
#
[aciccarello] In particular, how do people with static sites represent syndication in frontmatter?
#
[aciccarello] For example, this is how I store syndication on my site. I then render just the domain on the page. https://github.com/aciccarello/ciccarello.me/blob/main/posts/notes/2026-07-10-omnibear-available-for-chrome.md?plain=1

#
[burgeonlab] @IDK if this is what you're asking, but I don't have any info about syndication saved in the front matter for my Hugo setup. I have this little snippet that adds a hidden (sr-only) class <a> to the pages that have the following 3 tags (indieweb, homebrew website club, indiewebcamp). Then when I scan the page on http://Telegraph.p3k.io to send outgoing webmentions, it will pick up the IndieNews link.
#
[burgeonlab] `
{{- if (or (in .Params.tags "indieweb") (in .Params.tags "homebrew website club") (in .Params.tags "indiewebcamp")) -}}`#
[burgeonlab] `<a href="https://news.indieweb.org/en" class="u-category sr-only">#indienews</a>`

WinnerWind not sure if this is a dev question but assuming that your blog uses a file/folder based organization system, how do you store images? like, i mean, from an organizational prespective.
#
[capjamesg] Here is how I structured my images for a while: https://jamesg.blog/2025/02/07/redesigning-the-structure-of-my-blog-images-folder
#
[capjamesg] I now have a mostly flat structure because I upload images into Ghost and it takes care of the rest.
#
WinnerWind the issue with my SSG is that to call an image you need to type just the file-name of the image, which is great because i can move my images around without breaking anything. but that also means that i can arrange my images however i like, without breaking anything which means im hardly consistent
#
WinnerWind oh cool! taking a read.

#
WinnerWind [capjamesg]: that's really smart! going to start using dates for them now
#
[capjamesg] Yeah what is in that blog post is really my ideal.
#
[capjamesg] My Ghost ones are https://editor.jamesg.blog/content/images/2026/08/laptop.jpeg.

#
WinnerWind what is Ghost?
#
Loqi Ghost is an an open source CMS for blogging, general web publishing, newsletters, and paid subscriptions, and also a hosted silo at https://ghost.org https://indieweb.org/Ghost
#
[capjamesg] I could do without the /content/ part but otherwise it’s okay 😄
#
WinnerWind huh, i thought you had your own generator?
#
[capjamesg] I use Ghost as my CMS, and when I publish changes, it triggers a webhook that runs my SSG.
#
WinnerWind ah, that is a strange system but if it works, dont touch it ^_^
#
[capjamesg] It’s convoluted but it means I get a good UI for managing posts while also having plain text files for all my posts.
#
[capjamesg] If one day Ghost broke, I’d still have all my files in plain text.
#
[capjamesg] I would not necessarily recommend this system haha. Too many moving parts.
#
WinnerWind sensible! why not use a text editor and a file manager instead?
#
WinnerWind i feel like using a CMS solely to upload images is a bit of a stretch
#
WinnerWind especially if you aren't even using the CMS to do CMS things and use it just to trigger the SSG
#
[capjamesg] With Ghost I can drag and drop in images and videos and see previews of my posts and add alt text with a UI rather than markdown.
#
WinnerWind ah, that is helpful, i will admit
#
[capjamesg] My time to create a new page is also substantially lower. I can have a new page on my site in 30 seconds without touching a command line 😄
#
WinnerWind ah, im the opposite. i LIVE in the command line
#
WinnerWind i might consider writing a markdown editor to support drag and drop images because that has been an issue for me as well, using neovim to edit the blog page
#
[capjamesg] I like command lines, but not too much 😄
#
WinnerWind sensible!
#
WinnerWind [capjamesg]: question, how do you automate your SSG?
#
WinnerWind i mean as in, how exactly does the thing start generating your site again
#
WinnerWind personally i use a Forgejo Runner to generate the site when a new commit is made on a branch, which then copies the generated site onto the webhost via SCP
#
[capjamesg] Ghost sends a HTTP request with a password to an endpoint that triggers a build.
#
[capjamesg] That HTTP request will go to Ghost to get all posts, save them as text files to disk, and then run the SSG.
#
[capjamesg] This all happens on my server.
#
WinnerWind oh wow, you weren't kidding about moving parts. that is a lot of moving parts
#
[capjamesg] Yes. I would ideally like fewer moving parts but I have what I have 😭 😂
#
[capjamesg] And I haven’t even spoken about syndication and Webmentions yet 😂
#
WinnerWind lmao, i just chose not to bother with them because wow that looks complicated
#
[capjamesg] It works, but I’d like all this to be simpler.
#
[capjamesg] I have been thinking lately I might prefer my own CMS that only has what I need, and works from flat files, instead of having Ghost run. But then I have to build something new and that’s even more work 😭
#
[burgeonlab] all this site build/deployment/cicd talk makes me feel like I should continue writing my setup (drafted for ages and never finished the post)
#
WinnerWind im personally a fan of KISS, Keep It Super Simple, so adding stuff like web mentions and syndication other than like, RSS, kinda goes against what i want to do
#
WinnerWind [capjamesg]: i mean your system isnt too bad. ive seen more complicated systems in place that are being used to generate my friends' pages
#
[social] [capjamesg] I caught that last night. I looks like it may work well.
#
[capjamesg] [burgeonlab] I’d love to read that post!
#
[burgeonlab] Kev Quirk has a minimal cms. He built it and I've only heard good things about it. It's called http://pureblog.org
#
[burgeonlab] I think mine is also convoluted [capjamesg] hahaha
#
[capjamesg] Loqi no 😂
#
[burgeonlab] haha Loqi laughing along with me
#
WinnerWind i dont have a CMS But my SSG is the convoluted one
#
WinnerWind its a mess of python imports and libraries
#
WinnerWind the only saving grace is that it can set itself up and generate in just one command
#
WinnerWind [burgeonlab]: PureBlog looks super good, not going to lie!
#
[burgeonlab] I use Hugo + partial content is managed with Indiekit. So I guess that's considered also no CMS?
#
[capjamesg] Now that I have my system, I know I can make it simpler. Although I wish I knew how to make it simpler before I built it 😂
#
[social] I have a couple (or more) markdown editors that have drag and drop for images. My difficulty is when I through my posting workflow the moving the images to the right place and getting the link correct is manual.
#
[burgeonlab] I've never said hi to you before WinnerWind! Nice to meet you
#
WinnerWind nice to meet you too [burgeonlab] ! never seen you around here ^_^
#
[capjamesg] I think IndieKit is sort of a CMS?
#
WinnerWind [capjamesg]: ive seen people use some MacOS markdown editor and really like it
#
WinnerWind i forgot the name. unfortunately its paid
#
[capjamesg] Typora?
#
[capjamesg] If so, it’s one of my favourite tools ever.
#
WinnerWind not Typora, unfortunately
#
WinnerWind if the name comes to me i'll ping you

#
WinnerWind [capjamesg]: its Marked 2
#
[capjamesg] Thank you!
#
[social] I have about 7 markdown editors
#
[capjamesg] One for every day of the week?
#
WinnerWind i personally really like using vanilla NeoVim for markdown. my only gripe is tables (tables are literally uneditable in plain text.)
#
[burgeonlab] [capjamesg]: Hmmm. I guess it can be considered that since you can see some GUI and the content, but I only use it to manage some content types (the lightweight ones, not posts, pages, but for likes, rsvps etc). It doesn't see anything created outside Indiekit and also lives in a different repo :P
#
[capjamesg] That makes sense.
#
WinnerWind slightly offopic but today i learnt that Forgejo lets you turn off the commits and code part of a repository
lavandula joined the channel
#
WinnerWind this makes me question why i'd want that
#
[social] I live in two a lot (Obsidian and iA Writer), but MarkEdit, BBEdit, and a couple data science notebooks have markdown for text and notes (R Studio and Jupyter), I have a lot of notes and writing projects that I’m moving out of Ulysses (it is too walled for my workflow, but good for organizing writing in disparate notes). I also have Bear notes, but its is walled like Ulysses and I want to pull things out of it (they makers of Bear note hav
#
[social] pure markdown app that they are making and is now in beta that a wonderful UI like Bear, but without the walls).
#
[social] I used a precursor to Typora for a while, but it stopped working. The developers shifted and made Typora. I used Typora for a while, but no longer use it.
#
[aciccarello] ↩️ [burgeonlab] This is exactly what I was wondering. I've thought about overloading the tags for a few custom features too.
#
[social] WinnerWind turning off commits and code is odd. Not something I would use.
#
WinnerWind [social]: it defeats the purpose of the program, haha.
#
[burgeonlab] WinnerWind: I guess you want to still use Git to version stuff but don't want to show the code publicly? Just use Forgjeo for it's issue tracker, wiki, pages, etc?
#
[burgeonlab] its**
#
WinnerWind also i use Obsidian a lot but for my site im ONLY using neovim because i have my own special templates ( @//Template/Path|value1=Some Value//@ )
#
[social] Oh, Lettera is the markdown editor from the makers of Bear note.

#
[social] It is a really wonderful UI.
#
WinnerWind [burgeonlab]: im not going to click it but from the description i gather that it completely stops uploading/versioning code with that repo

[jeremycherfas] As a blast from the past I’m still using Byword as my markdown editor, along with a simple macro to smartify quotes etc. I also recently came across Jim Mitchell’sclodd-cms which looks interesting to me, though only for micro posts

#
[tantek] [capjamesg] that kind of hybrid CMS+SSG setup makes a lot of sense and I have seen others doing similar things. E.g. WordPress as a private CMS, then an SSG takes the generated files and publishes them on the actual site. Such a setup has better security properties as well, because CMSs tend to have more security surface (and holes) than SSGs.
