tonight i am working on a url parser in gdscript because i haven't found any url parsers for godot that cover my needs
#

which tbf, godot is "for gamedev" moreso than webdev so this isn't an especially unusual situation

probably going to need to make my own http client wrapper too because the HTTPRequest covers basically everything i need out of an http request *except* for the post-redirect URL :D

(my app already passes majority of indieauth.rocks tests, but it would be nice to pass all of them if I can)

WinnerWind: sans-serif vs monospace design https://blip.town/about or https://staging-blip.town/about

#
WinnerWind
rnkn: they both look monospace on my laptop <////3
#
WinnerWind
that said i do have issues with fonts because im on linux
#
rnkn
WinnerWind: oh weird the blip.town one should be sans-serif
#
WinnerWind
rnkn: AH! i changed my 'default' font on firefox to be a monospace one
#
WinnerWind
let me try in chromium
#
WinnerWind
hmmm, here i actually prefer the sans serif on
#
WinnerWind
the monospace version seems "excessively" or "aggressively" monospace to me

#
rnkn
WinnerWind: hmm, yes I am on the fence. I think I've decided the backend (file manager and edit page) should be monospace, but the landing page is more an "identity" of the project
#
rnkn
more ruminating needed
#
WinnerWind
exactly! show off your personality
#
rnkn
WinnerWind: partly inspired by https://thecreativeindependent.com/
#
WinnerWind
rnkn: this looks nice, its minimalist and i like the color choice
#
WinnerWind
makes it look like sticky notes
#
rnkn
WinnerWind: you dig the monospace here?
#
WinnerWind
rnkn: hmm, personal opinion but im conflicted
#
WinnerWind
'm looking around the varius pages and i find the monospace too thin to read in some sections, which i do think is a problem with some typefaces
#
rnkn
part of the reason I like monospace for blip.town is that it gives it a "scrappy" feel, not trying to be polished
#
WinnerWind
sometimes it switches back to serif fonts and then immediately to monospace and it looks like either someone forgot to set CSS rules -\o/-
#
WinnerWind
rnkn: to me monospace designs always end up looking extremly polished
#
WinnerWind
if you want a scrappy look but still dig monospace you could try courier
#
WinnerWind
courier is a pretty nice font even if it isn't monospace, i actually use it in my diary
#
rnkn
yeah I think your suggestion of monospace + sans-serif for headings work, but mixing serif and monospace is a bit hmm
#
rnkn
WinnerWind: you may also like this one https://www.naiveweekly.com
#
WinnerWind
i think this goes back to what i thought of earlier: using a monospace font isn't a sin but you need to commit to it
#
WinnerWind
here i'm seeing three styles clash at once
#
WinnerWind
rnkn: and im conflicted on this one too, i don't think serif is the right choice here
#
WinnerWind
it's going for that minimalist look again, but the background has these doodles on it
#
WinnerWind
it looks like sticky notes
#
WinnerWind
i feel like helvetica could be a nice safe choice for this type of design
#
rnkn
they just changed the background from white to that kinda ugly blue colour so that might influence
#
rnkn
a bit of a tangent but I'm considering changing the user site "snapshots" feature (git repo commits) to be only the text files (.md .txt .css .js) and not everything (e.g. images, PDFs) because 1. git doesn't do well with large binary files, and 2. server space
#
WinnerWind
git repo commits? how is that different from a commit?
Saige_Leah joined the channel
#
rnkn
that's what I mean, just flagging that "snapshots" are just commits
#
rnkn
but to the user the feature is just called "snapshots"
cotsuka joined the channel
#
WinnerWind
i didn't know they're called snapshots
#
WinnerWind
my site has a few images and its still under 100 MiB
#
rnkn
I just mean for my users, since they are artists not tech people, they would be confused by git terminology, so I call them snapshots
#
rnkn
my first user's git repo is 400MB, plus the work tree of 700MB, and I'm really only budgeting for 2GB per user
#
rnkn
this is the thing with artists, they like high res images of their work!
#
WinnerWind
rnkn: why not set up an LFS store for them?
#
WinnerWind
git LFS is a bit involved as a server owner but for a user once they set up the file types that should be checked with LFS, its basically the same workflow
#
rnkn
I looked into LFS but it's too complicated for my liking, I would probably use git-annex

#
rnkn
but my thinking is that users probably don't want versions of their binary files, just their page edits, like a wiki history
#
rnkn
and I think if I were just storing page edits I could make the history automatic with every page save, instead of currently where they have to click "take snapshot"
#
rnkn
it's hard to anticipate how users will act
#
[tantek]
"history automatic with every page save" is how MediaWiki / Wikipedia / our wiki operate — seems reasonable to merely re-use that UX

Random, random random question... Do existing open source scripts etc. for JSON > XLIFF conversion for localisation, with some careful adjustments, exist?
#
[rose]
I made a couple of helper scripts for a client. They are tailored to the nature of that project - it's a webapp thing really, requiring live on the fly language switching but also fully static. I just decided to put it all on a private repo for sharing with their IT department, and made it clear the helper scripts remain mine - not part of the deliverables. BUT I was wondering whether there is value in there and I should look at
#
[rose]
enhancing and releasing it open source. I am guessing other solutions may exist, but not sure.
#
[rose]
There are a few quirks, cos a lot would normally get stripped, but we actually need soft hyphenation places marked in these localisations. So there are instructions to translators to use [-], which is then converted to a proper soft hyphen by the script on import. Basically cos the technical language doesn't have working auto-hyphenation even for some terms in English, and it needs to work in a table on mobile. 😄
#
[rose]
uses python and bash btw. I am afraid I use bash even when it could be fully python. I recall discussing my love of a good bash script here a while back 😄
#
[rose]
[tantek] Weird! I am working on a redesign for my website after realising gradient animations are a bit heavy on rendering when a device does not have full access on pRoot Linux-in-Android virtual machine environments. I know, unusual, but it was indicative. I was planning to expand on my hexagon theme and have some in the background (as nodes) light up and so on. Love a good hexagon! But I use SVGs. 😄 Creative to achieve it
#
[rose]
without. The only case where I really have vaguely done that sort of thing is speech bubbles and after objects - can create the pointy bit quite easily in CSS.

[tantek]
tbh I think SVG should be used for content, not styling
#
[snarfed]
what is XLIFF
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "XLIFF" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "XLIFF is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
if your only use of shapes is to "look pretty" or "look creative", and not the core of the content / UX, then CSS is the right answer for that, because it should be something the user can easily disable etc. lots of user-choice and accessibility reasons for this
#
[tantek]
[snarfed] I don't know of any indieweb relevance for XLIFF (have also never heard of it)
#
[rose]
only content? but people DO use it for styling quite a bit - more efficient than images. Provided the SVGs are small of course. As in, background stuff. And with animation controls.
#
[tantek]
yes people used TABLEs for styling quite a bit too — but that was obviously wrong
#
[tantek]
sure, SVG as a replacement for PNG or JPEG or other raster formats makes sense when it's more efficient
#
[tantek]
then the question is was the original use of the image decorative or content?
#
[rose]
I’m talking about referencing the SVG in CSS as a background-image or mask layer - not dumping inline svg elements directly into the HTML markup.
#
[rose]
so yeah, decorative.
#
[rose]
but using it a bit like you would use an image anyway.
#
[rose]
[snarfed] and [tantek] I think you both actually answered my question actually... there probably IS some benefit to it. Maybe.
#
[rose]
A developer might just think oh JSON is enough. And tbh that is the way I designed the tool, before they told me a certain known big localisation agency would be doing localisation, and not internal teams. I know they are, well, not very good, so I decided to create a JSON to XLIFF converter - and one for the reverse trip - plus instructions - to avoid issues.
#
[rose]
Basically it is the format used in the translation sector to handle translations in translation management system. It allows you to include context, too.
#
[rose]
Basically any commercial localisation agency etc. will be using XLIFF or capable of importing them, and they have huge advantages over plain JSON, which I think a lot of us would default to.
#
[tantek]
Maybe better for a general web dev forum [Rose] unless this is something you are working on for your personal site
#
[rose]
It was more whether I should open source it or not.
#
[rose]
It could be useful to people presenting multilingual content on a static site, but it's kinda specific to when there is interactivity involved. So I dunno how much of that would be indie dev activities.
#
[rose]
Note: Volunteer translators use the same system. And so do people like me when localising their own projects, simply cos... well, it's a tool I have available.
#
[rose]
...But yeah, on my own website, I would localise the HTML and not use JSON. The JSON has specific uses limited to webapps and drawbacks in SEO and usability. So it's really just for on-the-fly switching when you don't want separate pages.
#
[rose]
BTW, re: SVGs and styling, this is the sort of thing I mean regarding SVGs. It keeps it more lightweight and smooth than using an image in the same role, and it is not in the DOM:
#
[rose]
.nodes::after {
#
[rose]
position: absolute;
#
[rose]
content: "";
#
[rose]
bottom: -18px;
#
[rose]
left: 0;
#
[rose]
height: 32px;
#
[rose]
width: 100%;
#
[rose]
pointer-events: none;
#
[rose]
background-image: url('/favicon2.svg'),url('/favicon2.svg'),url('/favicon2.svg');
#
[rose]
background-repeat: no-repeat;
#
[rose]
background-size: 32px 32px;
#
[rose]
background-position: 30px center,90px center,150px center
#
[tantek]
re: "could be useful to people presenting multilingual content on a static site" — good first question to ask then is, is this useful to YOU presenting multilingual content on your site?
#
[tantek]
good example of presentational SVG in CSS!
#
[rose]
On mine, no - HTML is better. But it would be useful if I were perhaps working on some sort of information tool where I didn't need every bit of localised text to be in the DOM from the start. It would be useful for presenting data in tables, for example. I don't personally do that. Others might?
#
[rose]
Dynamic data I mean - cos yeah, there are strong arguments to use plain localised static HTML in very many cases. Inserting translations via JS is against standard best practice, but there are some use cases. It does make sense for this client cos they only wanted to maintain one file (I did originally plan multiple for each language, automatically generated, but then it can't be integrated as a webapp).

Also if you want a richer display of the app name, that client ID document has the name and URL so you could show "indiebookclub" as a link: https://indiebookclub.biz/id
