The idea of the slashpages weirdness was to have a browser plugin that shows you all the pages that are available for a site https://github.com/pfefferle/slashpages-browser-extension. The browser extension also checks them one by one using requests but that is very slow, so I thought about an index. But now that I write about it, it should be also possible using `/slashpages` with XOXO 🤔

Why I decided to use a sidefile: I love microformats and am using them for 20 years now (https://notiz.blog/2006/11/20/microformats/) but it is simply not practical in a CMS when you want to provide a plug&play solution (plugin). We had a lot of discussions around that in the #indieweb-wordpress channel and there is still no proper solution to it. And ironically the one solution that is promising (the block editor) is not very
#
[pfefferle]
popular in the indieweb community 😉

!tell [snarfed] seems like following from my Bridgy profile doesn't work after 5 accounts? or I can't seem to follow Bridgy bridged accounts? e.g. @somedomain @bsky.brid.gy

Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

[manton] I am following the spec and implemented it fully into WordPress. I agree that you can argue about what they have chosen as formats, but I am quite impressed by how they are using all these simple formats to built an app that feels very much like a combination of an IndieReader and a Social Network: https://hypertexting.dev/ (that is why I asked them about Micropub support on Bluesky
#
[tantek]
[pfefferle] I think the assertion is that if you're going to do a sidefile, why not a minimal HTML+microformats side file which is trivial to style with CSS for a friendlier user-viewable experience?
#
[tantek]
E.g. why not a separate h-feed page? I believe GWG has worked on this
#
[pfefferle]
but isn't that technically also duplicate content and a side file?
#
[pfefferle]
I tried to experiment a bit with OPML and XSLT so that it is nicely readable for users, but also easy to parse by machines.
#
[tantek]
it is yes. however it is more user-friendly and easier for users to inspect and see what it is they are sending over to some other service
#
[pfefferle]
for the Webfinger plugin I do exactly that btw. adding a simple HTML page that formats the comment properly 🙂
#
[tantek]
and XSLT is being removed from browsers so all the (random XML format) + XSLT approaches will be dead within a year — not something to build anything new with
#
[pfefferle]
I found a hack to use JS instead but that is also not very popular her, I know 🙂
#
[pfefferle]
I am a bit frustrated especially when it comes to WordPress, because the new Block editor has SO much potential to build custom blocks that do all the microformats rendering, but most of the IndieWeb WordPress users seem to have switched to ClassicPress or still use the simple WYSIWYG editor 😞

As one of those, I can only say that the complexity and flexibility of blocks is not something that I want or need.

There's also the accessibility considerations with the blocks, which make them hard to recommend building for; on a more subjective level, I also help manage several WordPress sites, and every time a plugin developer decides to change how their blocks works its a complete headache (e.g. moving buttons or options around), so I know some of our clients have just gotten fed up of that too
#
GWG
Before blocks I had considered a parser that would extract from post content and render for editing. So block like

One for anyone experimenting with Claude & Cursor (doesn't seem to have gone much beyond that specific combo, if I'm reading this right): https://thehackernews.com/2026/10/official-claude-code-vs-code-extension.html

Im interested to ask some questions, at a later time, about IWCs implementation of etherpad
#
[Morgan_M]
a w3c group Im in has interest from some people in getting off Google docs
#
[manton]
[pfefferle] I encouraged them to adopt Micropub too. I feel like Micropub is actually having a bit of a resurgence right now, because anyone can vibe-code a blogging UI that matches exactly what they want.
#
[tantek]
indeed. I expect the simplicity of Micropub will mean there will be more vibe-coded clients that are created and work
#
aaronpk
micropub has also been around long enough that it's baked into the models, so you don't even have to point it at the spec, it already knows what it is
#
[manton]
Yep. AI understands Micropub really well. (Which reminds me, about time to draft a 1.1 spec with all the new things…)
#
aaronpk
we really should

[tantek] re following, can you elaborate? is this Bridgy Fed? you're using the web UI on https://fed.brid.gy/web/tantek.com/following ?
#
[snarfed]
oh, and yeah, the web follow UI is aging a bit, it doesn't support following Bluesky users. needs some work

By the way, trying a new experimental q=places query.. I want to try to finally check in without Swarm
#
aaronpk
i need to do that too
#
GWG
It's q= places, with arguments for latitude, longitude or a geo uri, and a limit parameter, and returns a places array of mf2 h-cards, with an added property to indicate if they are local venues on my site or proposed ones that are coming from an API.
#
GWG
I also have a parameter to only show my local venues.
#
GWG
Since my site also has the option of private venues, e.g. home it only shows those if the token is allowed to access them.
#
GWG
I need to write this up on the extension proposals page
#
aaronpk
that sounds reasonable
#
GWG
aaronpk: Writing it or my design?
#
aaronpk
what you just described as how it works
#
[manton]
I released a new version of our http://Micro.blog app Sunlit this week with location check-in. It uses Micropub with property “checkin”, which should match what OwnYourSwarm does. https://www.manton.org/2026/10/25/with-foursquare-acquired-by-private.html
#
[manton]
Working well for me this week. I switched over from Swarm to this a few days ago.
#
[manton]
I haven’t needed q=places because I put all of my check-ins on their own blog… But that sounds like a good idea.
#
aaronpk
where do the places come from?
#
aaronpk
oh, apple maps?
#
[manton]
Yeah, Apple Maps, for now. I’ve done some experiments with OSM and Overture, and that’s the long-term plan.
#
aaronpk
yeah the goal with q=places is to let your website return the options to show in the app
#
[manton]
Oh, gotcha. I misunderstood. That sounds good too.
#
aaronpk
that way it can also take into account past checkin history or places defined only in your website
#
[manton]
Makes sense. Half the time I’m checking into the same places over and over.
#
aaronpk
i cheat with that in Teacup, and the app keeps a log itself of everything you post, and uses that database to show you suggestions

was not* working

oh I also meant if you try follow a bluesky user's bridged fedi address, eg @...@bsky.brid.gy. BF knows what that is, it's not fooled 😁

[Morgan_M]
I mentioned earlier that I might ask about etherpad implementation. Some of my questions are of course answered by perusing the docs. Im just curious. Does anyone have any mixed feelings about it? Maintenance? features? reactions from newer people?

[Morgan_M]: I mean, obviously far preferable to Google Docs etc. – would be interested to know how much hassle it is extracting, formatting HTML for wiki

[Morgan_M]
Yeah I agree, trying to prepare a persuasive case to a w3c group to move off Google Docs. Already a few who have issues with it. But it does seem to require a small burden of evidence
#
[capjamesg]
We have an archive bot that handles the archiving process, which we can trigger from chat.
#
[capjamesg]
The only work required after a meeting is to trigger the bot, and review the archived document to see if any formatting changes are required.
#
[capjamesg]
The Etherpad has been consistently effective over the years. But it does have a few security limitations I think, among them there is no authentication by default.
#
[Morgan_M]
Thats a pretty great endorsement really.
#
[Morgan_M]
Im hoping to make headway and see how it goes
