gRegorDoes the first discussion point "formalizing the extension process" need some work before the meeting, to make sure everyone's on board? I'm not really familiar with the "correct" process for that with specs.
LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "subtitles" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "subtitles is ____", a sentence describing the term)
gRegor"Transcripts are often synced and embedded into videos and shown contemporaneously with the audio track in a process known as closed captioning."
[tantek]Well Wikipedia is closer to what I expected, at least in the first sentence, though it too ties closed captions as a form of "transcription" so maybe that's close enough? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closed_captioning
[tantek]Still feels like a stretch to call closed captions a "transcript". More like the other way around, a transcript can be built from closed captions.
[tantek]Transcripts have no time syncing requirement whereas closed captions do. Maybe that's not enough of a difference to warrant a separate page though?
[tantek]I suppose one way to approach how to differentiate is to ask what (implied usecases) would a developer be looking for if they searched for one or the other
capjamesgCaptions are also written recordings but the intent is to be presented alongside the original material (i.e. as closed captions, as subtitles).
[artlung]I’m still in gathering info phase on my a11y and comics which I notice has bad nesting. I’ve got another presentation to watch recently from a comics coop who talked about “transcripts”
[tantek]agreed [artlung], "audio description" is quite different from a transcript as well. some movie theaters offer audio description headphones which very much say something quite different than what the characters are saying (which is usually what goes in a transcript)
[artlung]It’s from a comics POV and conflates terminology somewhat which is common in these things. Everything’s “alt text” idiomatically. Even if not a lot of it is actually text in an alt attribute.
[artlung]Or not, it’s not got everything I wish it had. I may compile a glossary of these terms with some distinguishing usages and tags they’re most associated with,
[artlung]Img[alt], figure figcaption, caption, and whether and how they could be used with single image, multi image, dynamic animation, video and audio elements.
