[artlung]
(2 hours from now)
#
[Al_Abut]
Thanks for the reminder. The iCal link doesn’t work in google calendar for me :(
#
[Al_Abut]
So I’m still back to manually scanning and updating the events 🤷‍♂️
#
aaronpk
which ical link?
#
[Al_Abut]
I added these 4
#
gRegor
Odd. I just subscribed to https://events.indieweb.org/ics/tag/pacific in gCal. There's no upcoming events yet, but past ones filled in.
#
gRegor
Did you click through on the "iCalendar Feed" link and copy the link from the form? That "iCalendar Feed" link isn't the feed itself, maybe that could be made more clear
#
gRegor
The url has "/preview" at the end, but it's not really previewing, just the form with the ICS URL you can copy and subscribe to
#
[Al_Abut]
Ah, lemme check
#
[Al_Abut]
Nope, no preview in the url
#
aaronpk
oh that's the ics for just the one event
#
aaronpk
you need to susbcribe to the tag feed
#
[Al_Abut]
Oh gotcha. I just clicked through the event page and assumed it was a series.
#
[Al_Abut]
Ah, never noticed the tags on the event pages before. Now I know what they’re for but don’t see iCal links on those pages either?
#
aaronpk
yeah there isn't really the concept of an event series other than tags
#
aaronpk
but this is the second time today this has come up
#
[tantek]
tags seems to solve this problem reasonably well
#
aaronpk
yeah, i think the answer is to make the tag feeds accessible from the individual event pages
#
[tantek]
Though I suppose cloning could create such an implicit concept as a "series"
#
aaronpk
I did just add a link from a cloned event to the event it's cloned from, so now in theory i have a full chain available
#
aaronpk
so I *could* make it so that if you subscribe to a single event, the ics feed for that event will get future events added to it
#
aaronpk
or the other way to think of it is the ics feed on an event page would actually correspond to the chain of cloned events
#
aaronpk
the downside would be if someone ever creates an event without cloning, then it would break the chain
#
aaronpk
which is why i like tags for this better
#
[tantek]
That makes sense
#
[tantek]
The advantage of "chaining" is that it could also be something you as an event creator explicitly choose on a new event (like this is the most recent version of this previous event, pick from earlier versions)
#
[tantek]
Then the old(er) event(s) could also display a banner at the top saying "this event was in the past, see the upcoming event here: link"
#
[tantek]
That way I could e.g chain the IWC Berlin 2025 event to the 2024 event and if someone somehow found that one (eg google search) then they could more easily find the upcoming one
#
aaronpk
that would be cool
#
aaronpk
pretty sure i would need a way to manually edit the chained event then, because it seems very likely someone will create next year's IWC from scratch rather than copying the previous one
#
[tantek]
right, it would need UI to chain to a prev event
#
[tantek]
Meetable slowly working its way towards being a self-hosted Eventbrite / Meetup replacement 💪
#
aaronpk
the real challenge is registration/ticketing
#
[tantek]
yeah that's a very different kind of thing. fortunately Tito does that part quite well without trying to be a full events platform
#
[tantek]
maybe ticketing is an orthogonal building block
#
aaronpk
the number of options in tito is a lot, it clearly indicates there is not a one size fits all solution for ticketing
#
aaronpk
every time i would go set it up for an IWC i would have to re-learn the whole thing
#
aaronpk
which does suggest that maybe there's room for a simpler solution for the relatively simple case of IWCs
#
gRegor
[Al_Abut], the tag iCal link is at the bottom https://events.indieweb.org/tag/eastern > iCalendar Feed > then copy the ICS URL
#
[Al_Abut]
Thanks [gRegorLove]!
