[tantek] [Joschi_Kuphal] [me1850] Hey, would anything speak against moving the registration process away from Tito over to http://Meetup.com? I have these reasons:
#
[Schepp]
1. I would like to feature Sia Consulting and the city of Düsseldorf as sponsors of the event. Marc prefers not to feature them on his page as they contribute almost nothing compared to other featured sponsors.
#
[Schepp]
2. If we set the event up ourselves we can have an eye on the registrants and we can contact them ourselves
#
[Schepp]
3. Registrants are able to see which other folks are going
#
[Schepp]
4. And finally http://Meetup.com is crappy in many ways but really strong in spreading the news about events
#
[Schepp]
As an organizer of local meetups I do have a payed http://meetup.com account and could set this up as a group called "IndieWebCamp Düsseldorf" or even "Homebrew Website Club Düsseldorf" with the IndieWebCamp being one of the activities.
#
[Schepp]
And finally: Di.Day accepted our application so we can publish the event there too.

(to be clear: I totally understand Marc)

[Schepp] I have no objections in general, BUT: firstly, I think it's important that the event is featured close to the btconf so that people who come to the btconf and buy a ticket take note of the IndieWebCamp. Having the IWC directly on the btconf ticket page is an unbeatable advantage, I think. Otherwise, the IWC would just be an independent event that ‘happens’ to be in the same city at the same time. However, people from
#
[Joschi_Kuphal]
outside the area will not go looking for it, and I think the whole thing would appeal more to people in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area (if at all).
#
[Joschi_Kuphal]
Of course, I am in favour of sponsors being presented appropriately. At the same time, I have always understood in the past that IWCs are not about putting sponsors in the spotlight (I have been a sponsor myself several times, as has Mozilla, and the more ‘modest’ format has always been sufficient).
#
[Joschi_Kuphal]
Of course, that doesn't have to stop us, but personally I would find it more appealing if the sponsorship were perceived as more subtle. (Yes, I know, not necessarily what sponsors want ...)
#
[Schepp]
[Joschi_Kuphal] We could still be featured on the btconf page, but we would drop out of this overview: https://beyondtellerrand.com/events/dusseldorf-2026/tickets
#
[Schepp]
Of course this will result in less people coming to btconf taking notice, true. On the other hand, as you said, we could gather more folks from around town. Ideally we would want both...
#
[Schepp]
As for sponsorship, the city of Düsseldorf specifically asked and I think they would be happy if they had a "proof of work" to show their bosses. And if they are featured, then we should also feature Sia Consulting.

[Schepp] we have listed sponsors on the wiki page of past IndieWebCamps in a "Sponsors" section on the page and that's gone quite well
#
[tantek]
If you can get official logos for the sponsors we can create something like https://indieweb.org/2025/Berlin#Sponsors
#
[tantek]
For 2, Marc has been very good about getting us a list of registrants as needed, e.g. to send out emails before the camp. The hardest part of that is writing the email (we have some on the wiki), not the "contact them" part
#
[tantek]
For 3, we used to have a way of displaying people who signed up using a Tito embed. Aaronpk would know more about that and we could try to set that up again. We also encourage people to RSVP on the event page itself
#
[tantek]
When is indiewebcamp Düsseldorf
#
Loqi
🎪 IndieWebCamp Düsseldorf on Apr 25 https://events.indieweb.org/ewHCZehNA3gg
#
[tantek]
Hmm I thought I had RSPVd. I'll go do that now
#
[tantek]
For number 4, the best way to spread the word to to folks who are indieweb adjacent is to blog the event (and optionally POSSE) ourselves. And NOT make people depend on Meetup for getting information
#
[tantek]
In many way aaronpk and community feedback created Meetable so we wouldn't have to use silos like Meetup, which, as you point out, are kind of horrible to use
#
[tantek]
IMO in general we should not be encouraging people to get information about the IndieWeb from Meetup
#
[tantek]
oh it looks like by adding the Tito ticketing link, the RSVP feature on Meetable is hidden. interesting
#
[tantek]
lastly, I think the most important aspect of IndieWebCamps is building and strengthening community, and as [Joschi_Kuphal] says, this is why we feature the event "close to the btconf so that people who come to the btconf and buy a ticket take note of the IndieWebCamp". There is no beating the btconf community that Marc has built over the years. That strength of community and trust brings a lot more value to IndieWebCamp than say, if we
#
[tantek]
somehow doubled the number of people going — e.g. if random people signed up that had no connection.
#
[tantek]
This is also why blogging is better than advertising. We prefer folks who have some personal connection to the people in the community, as they are more likely to actively participate, show up both days, and probably show up to future events like HWC DUS.
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, is there a way to tell Meetable to please allow/show RSVPs even if/when there is a tickets link? Otherwise it seems like adding a link to Tito etc. reduces the features of the page.

[Schepp] I stubbed a "Sponsor" section on the wiki page for the event, similar to what we had for IWC Berlin 2025 with Sia as the venue sponsor: https://indieweb.org/2026/D%C3%BCsseldorf#Sponsors — if you get a logo or link for Sia, please feel free to update!
#
[tantek]
Similarly go ahead and add "City of Düsseldorf" and what aspect they are sponsoring (I wasn't sure what they were sponsoring about the event — wanted to know that before adding them as a sponsor)
#
[tantek]
[Schepp] here's another example, I added a Sponsors section to the upcoming IWC NUR with the venue sponsor with link and logo: https://indieweb.org/2026/Nuremberg#Sponsors
