[morgan] [capjamesg] Spencer made this video recently about Zinefest, we might play this at our event? It just sort of captures a vibe https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=NISa1fuOPk8

[zacharykaiwrit] [capjamesg] Exciting, wow! Thank you so much to you and [morgan] for hosting! I've RSVPed. Might I make a banner for the event?
#
[morgan] That would be lovely 😄
#
[zacharykaiwrit] Wonderful! Shall do so and add it to the events page.

[capjamesg] Thank you [zacharykaiwrit]++
#
[capjamesg] [morgan] Nice video! It is definitely worth mentioning during the call but I would avoid playing videos during the meetup since we are all joining to speak about zines.
#
[capjamesg] One area that would be helpful to get some thoughts on is what the opening question should be.
#
[capjamesg] Is there a particular topic you’d like to start with?
#
[capjamesg] The ideal topic is open-ended, can be answered by everyone, and would get the discussion going.
#
[capjamesg] My go-to at HWC is “What has everyone been doing on their websites recently?” which fuels the discussion long enough for it to take its own direction.
#
[morgan] Good idea - Ill have a little think for a suggestion over the next day or two
#
[capjamesg] Thank you!
#
[morgan] this is kind of a tangential thought, but basically Im a believer in honoring licenses or copyright of zines generally, but it would be cool if we had some zines to share
#
[morgan] like something to take away with from it 🙂
#
[morgan] I have a few zines which are about what zines are about, but I wonder if technically they would still be copying if I shared them hmm. Its like, if I asked the creator, Im pretty sure they would be cool with it
#
[morgan] More motivation to make an indieweb related zine myself to share perhaps
#
[capjamesg] Yes!
#
[capjamesg] We should definitely talk about our own zines we have made.
#
[capjamesg] I have a psuedo-zine I can talk about but really I’m there to learn from everyone else 😂
#
[morgan] Im excited about this. That video I shared basically kinda captures whats fun and eclectic about zinefests, a whole bunch of people like "heres a thing I made!" and they are all very interesting and weird and fun.
#
[capjamesg] I think we should focus on our own works / mention other things we have seen that are interesting rather than trying to share others’ zines that aren’t already online, free, and public (for example something like https://blog.avas.space/zine-law/). We should focus on what we can confidently share without having to do lots of prep on asking for permission.
#
[morgan] Perhaps the main theme to me about zines is basically self-publishing, similar to publishing ones own website in a sense. Why its joyful, freer in some ways. I think the self publishing thing is the main ethos

[zacharykaiwrit] I'd be happy to offer all participants a zine of their choice from my catalog: http://lunaseeker.com/catalog/zines if that helps.

Loqi 🏕 Pop-ups are one-time IndieWeb events covering a specific topic, similar to an IndieWebCamp session, or a pop-up Homebrew Website Club in a new location. The IndieWeb community is planning upcoming pop-ups — if you'd like to help, please contribute to this page https://indieweb.org/popup
#
[tantek] popup << Pop-ups are not webinars. Pop-ups are intended for primarily interactive discussions. As such pleas don't use pop-ups to primarily pitch or present or playback videos for products or services. Make such material available online and link to it for people to optionally checkout async / after
#
Loqi ok, I added "Pop-ups are not webinars. Pop-ups are intended for primarily interactive discussions. As such pleas don't use pop-ups to primarily pitch or present or playback videos for products or services. Make such material available online and link to it for people to optionally checkout async / after" to the "See Also" section of /pop-up https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=110559&oldid=110121
#
[capjamesg] fixed a typo
#
[morgan] I will probably be sharing a link to the video with a description at some point, as its about a zinefest and created by an indieweb participant, but not playing it on the call itself as a presenter makes sense for sure 🙂
#
[morgan] The website for Wellington Zinefest is https://www.wellingtonzinefest.com/ which is charming
#
[capjamesg] Sounds good!
#
[capjamesg] I like the design of that website!
#
[capjamesg] The photo grids are cool too!

#
[morgan] Just to add, I found it weird the style of speech and adding items to the wiki about products or services or something like that or implying that its a webinar because I liked a video and in a single sentence suggested maybe playing it, as an idea. "Lets share the video, not play it on the call 🙂 " suffices directly in terms of communication perhaps, just a suggestion, theres like maybe 6 of us who have expressed direct
#
[morgan] interest, maybe Dozens of Us who will ever read the wiki.
#
[morgan] Hmm, I apologize for the tone of the last statement. Just having a bad day, the wiki adding can be a lot sometimes. Have a good day.
#
[morgan] Excited for the festival event about zines but gonna chill for a while, will be back maybe Friday online with a fresh lens on many things.
#
[tantek] Morgan there is a very high allergy here to anything that seems like corporate sales whether it is intended that way or not. Unfortunately that includes anything seemingly self-centered or one-way broadcast - essentially attention-seeking in contrast to being interactive. TBH there is a lot of overlap with things like that and behaviors like void posting which are also self-centric and attention-seeking
#
[morgan] Ok just to be clear though the video i shared is an artists video story about a zinefest
#
[morgan] I understand your point
#
[morgan] Well Ill just say I know how to modulate and prepare for events, and know not to take up too much space or what not in the actual engaged events, its just the preparation is still very excited and perhaps misinterpreted as if im gonna take up the whole event. But you still have really valid points.
#
[morgan] Thats quite a profound observation actually, I just felt basically my example was de minimas or something like that, that I would put into a chat or etherpad
#
[morgan] Oh thanks definitely also dont mean to unfairly react to useful wiki updates myself either, just something about today has been a bit stressed heh
#
[morgan] I will be thinking about that observation about experts for a while, thats so true that there is not enough time for actual engaged discussion and a lot of attempts to present self interest biased stuff
#
[morgan] re the w3c
#
[morgan] or presentational style. I dont know. Im gonna go get some sun outside. Anyone is welcome to message me about any aspect of zines in the next week! no presentations, just joy etc.
#
[morgan] Talking about presentations, a major aspect of zine culture are zinefests and they typically have a tabling system where the style of event is a larger group of people presenting their work as groups or individuals. Like you might zoom past like quite a few tables and only get a little information of each one and interact with a few more than others. The emphasis is on small creative works, possibly a handful ever have earned a
#
[morgan] profit, but most are not expected to ever make any money. Hopefully we get enough zine contributions for this kind of broad experience
#
[morgan] It would be cool if we could incorporate tabling into the event format somehow, a digital form of tabling
#
[morgan] People just putting their own websites into an etherpad would probably do this, but tabling implies a little organization and in a physical space limited time and space to a degree that makes zinefests actually pretty neat / like a festival
