schmarty just had a weird thing where I couldn't play a podcast from the tag list view and had to click on a permalink to play the audio
#
tantek
lol the "yo" description read outloud

schmarty - yes confirmed, I've tried to listen to two different episodes by clicking the play button underneath the heading - in the tagged posts list view - and the loading cursor spins / "Transferring data from ..." but nothing every starts playing
#
tantek
when I click on the permalink and press the play button, it works immediately
#
tantek
might want to double-check your <audio> elements in the list view?
#
tantek
!tell schmarty Would you consider doing a live / one continuous take version of This Week in the IndieWeb Audio Edition at Summit? Perhaps even starting with a live interview. prep / script is obviously fine, would just be awesome to see you perform it live.

!tell tantek doing a live TWITIWAE at summit sounds like fun! watching me record it live like i do at home would be pretty weird (each short segment is recorded individually, throat clearing and coughs are left out). but some "live version" is certainly possible

i'd enjoy doing a full live recording at IWS if folks are interested. i'd prep the script ahead of time so worst case it's ~10 uncomfortable minutes. i'm sure i'd get a lot of good feedback about it! ;}
#
tantek
schmarty - I think it would be an awesome "talk" during day 1
#
tantek
perhaps during lunch?
#
tantek
(which is on Saturday so the timing works)
#
tantek
or maybe right *after* lunch, as a good reason to draw people back from lunch on time
#

fine by me!

that works

i'll need to work out how to do the audio cues live... which makes me wonder if i could get someone to join me for a 1 minute interview at the top 😆
#

you could get aaronpk to cue the music :)

with you "on stage" :)

#
tantek
schmarty have you considered adding person-tags to the podcasts tagging everyone who is quoted or referenced?
#
tantek
(sounds like a lot of work, but curious about it)
#
tantek
which makes me wonder if the h-entry TWITIW posts send webmentions themselves
#
schmarty
tantek: oh yeah. i have lots of things like that that i'd like to do. i think my first step is to start making my transcripts HTML rather than plain text.
#
tantek
I bet people would want notifications of when they're mentioned in an podcast
#
schmarty
to make it tractable i think i need to make a tool to manage the person-tags and mention links as i go
#
tantek
indeed
#
tantek
I have person-tags support but I find it quite tedious currently
#
schmarty
having done a year of episodes i think i will set aside some time to level up my tooling in order to level up the production value :}
#
tantek
also I'm annoyed that Twitter's API doesn't support their person-tagging feature on tweets
#
tantek
which makes it harder to POSSE
#
tantek
I mean you have to instead @-mention them by hand in your POSSE tweet
#
tantek
which I also haven't coded up yet
#
tantek
though at least the new (280) char limit provides more space for doing @-mentions for person-tags
#
aaronpk
omg there's no way I can perform those songs live
#
aaronpk
tho that sounds hilarious
#
aaronpk
maybe I can see if there is some piano arrangement I could do...
#
tantek
aaronpk, I mean "live" the way perhaps Daft Punk performs "live" :)
#
tantek
schmarty: oh dear I think I found a copy/paste error where you linked to the same audio file two posts in a row!
#
schmarty
tantek: ooh, yikes! can you point me at them?
#
tantek
January 20-26 and the next one
#
schmarty
oh, hmmm.
#
schmarty
those certainly do look remarkably similar.
#
tantek
yes the newer post links to the week before's audio
#
tantek
just listening to the intro, it says the dates
#
tantek
January 27th - February 2nd audio element is from the week before
#
tantek
the next one sounds correct again
#
schmarty
i wonder how i managed that. looking for the correct mp3 now.
#
schmarty
i think i simply uploaded the wrong file. that explains a lot, since i remember having to edit the name of that episode by hand. i thought it was a typo in the metadata but it was likely just the wrong file >_<

!tell schmarty congrats once again on a year of TWITIWAE! Is this a good opportunity to consider perhaps a bunch of (mostly editorial) changes for the next year? Going to drop a few ideas in the chat for your consideration
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
[tantek]
1. Deemphasize “wiki”. Eg instead of “updates from the indieweb wiki...” how about just “updates from indieweb.org”?
#
[tantek]
2. New community members, e.g. instead of “A new user page was created for Amit Gawande, at amitgawande.com.” How about the shorter “Amit Gawande joined us from amitgawande.com.”
#
[tantek]
3. Services & orgs: e.g. instead of “The "GitHub" page was updated with two new developments.” How about “Two new developments regarding "GitHub":”
#
[tantek]
4. IndieWeb Development, new pages: e.g. instead of “A new page was created for "fragmentioner" ... ” how about “New this week: "fragmentioner", ...”
#
[tantek]
4.1 for page updates, e.g. instead of “The "Content delivery network" page was updated with ...” how about: “On the subject of "Content deliver network", ...”
[kevinmarks] joined the channel
#
[tantek]
5. For additional new pages that you’d prefer to skip defining in the podcast, perhaps a catch all in the “new this week” section like: “Also new this week: finsta and rinsta, see indieweb.org for about those”
#
[tantek]
(Better grammar tho :) )
#
[tantek]
6. For upcoming events, perhaps split into explicit calls to action of “Join us in person next week at the following events!” And maybe something about indieweb events are for all levels, whether you want to start your own site, push the boundaries of the indieweb, or just have an interest in cutting edge independent publishing
#
[tantek]
6.1 for further out events (more than a week), perhaps “Save the dates for: ...”, and maybe for every IWC/IWS, note how many going already (if any), including any notable speakers, and encourage people to book their travels and hotels (recommendations and details on the wiki page of course)
#
[tantek]
That’s if for now off the top of my head. Would love to hear your thoughts on the general themes of those, and what other ideas you’ve had over the past year for making changes in the podcast.
#
[tantek]
Aaronpk, it’s possible some of the above may be applicable to improvements that could be made in the “text” newsletter as well, take a look and see if anything resonates with you ^^^

I like the idea of reducing repetition regarding mentioning the wiki and edits to it rather than focusing on the content of the edits. There have been a few times when I’ve collapsed that language in the past and it sounds cleaner to me, if somewhat more time consuming to write.
#
schmarty
Regarding events, I’m interested in giving that whole section an overhaul. Each episode dedicated a lot of time to explaining HWC and on calls to action about them. Probably time to rethink those.
#
schmarty
I also like the idea of a super concise section for new terms that would not have “made the cut” because they are stub dfn pages. It’s a fun way to get listeners to check the actual newsletter
#
schmarty
In general I am very open to talking about the editorial structure of the podcast. Feedback is somewhat rare, so I appreciate any discussion!
sknebel left the channel
#
schmarty
I have few hard constraints on it other than wanting to keep each episode at about 10 minutes and being wary of adding any time consuming steps in the script writing process, which takes the most time because it is a lot of reading and summarizing.
[tantek] joined the channel
#
[tantek]
Re time consuming script writing, can sympathize. Hence wondering if some of these suggestions would work upstream in the newsletter itself
#
aaronpk
I would be happy to change stuff at the source to make things easier
#
aaronpk
I'm sure there are some things that can be automated, but I know a lot of it is editorial still
#
schmarty
aaronpk: I have a couple of markup changes in mind. I’d like to play with parsing the newsletter itself and doing some automation of the summaries. If that works well I bet some of it would make sense to push upstream to the newsletter itself.
#
[tantek]
I wonder if orgs & services is something we could distinguish in the newsletter
#
[tantek]
Like proper nouns somehow get their own section?
#
[tantek]
Curious how schmarty distinguishes
#
schmarty
That’d be interesting.
#
schmarty
I’m on mobile at the moment but I may have notes on how I distinguish here: https://indieweb.org/User:Martymcgui.re/this-week-indieweb-podcast

Wiki is better than email
#
aaronpk
I actually think that a combination of wiki + issue tracker is ideal
#
aaronpk
wikis are good for documenting current state, but not good for actually having a conversation
#
aaronpk
the issue tracker is better at having parallel conversations over an extended period of time than a mailing list is
#
aaronpk
so I like the workflow of discussing on the issue tracker then updating the state of things on the wiki and closing the issue
[eddie] joined the channel
#
tantek
I think that's reasonable too
#
aaronpk
in my ideal world an issue tracker is just an aggregator for peoples' posts they make on their own site
#
tantek
expects to see issues.indieweb.org as a parallel to news.indieweb.org
