#[eddie]My point is that many people can be turned away from the term “Homebrew Website” because it just sounds very technical. Yes, putting a 101 on it says “beginners” but it could still mean beginners of people that want to learn tech stuff
#[eddie]The point isn’t to change the name but to first develop clarity around the ultimate purpose of HWC (Makers of anything or Gen 1/2). Then if it’s meant to be Makers of anything, I think a name change should be considered.
#Loqi[[eddie]] It’s really the same conversation we had about the principles page at the summit this year. Does HWC target makers of anything or makers of indieweb technology
#[eddie]If HWC is mostly a Gen 1/2 targeted event, that’s fine. But I think it needs to be determined if that is the goal or not.
#[tantek]Wider than that. Anyone that wants or is curious about having their own presence on the web
#[eddie]So it’s the same target audience as the Principles page then
#[tantek]That’s what we’ve framed it as in SF and that’s help bring in a diverse set of folks from researchers to hackers to kids with their dad that just want their own place to play on the web
#[tantek]Principles are still there to focus and appeal to folks who are looking for a community that does what we do
#[tantek]Whereas HWC is totally ok for casual / occasional participants who are more curious than anything
#[eddie]Then yeah, if that’s the target audience, I do feel like a potential change of name should be considered in the long-run.
#[tantek]Sometimes people connect at HWC with the solution or service they’re looking for and they’re all set, they’re not necessarily looking for “community” (though meeting in person does help a lot with that)
#[eddie]Not tomorrow, maybe not even next year, but it should probably be in the back of our minds
#[tantek]Eddie one way to do that would be open to new cities picking different names and seeing how they do
#[eddie]When I try to restart Frederick, I would probably try a new name, everyone that showed up to Fredericks were VERY technical, which is fine, but I think the name ends up moving it that way. If the title turns someone off, they won’t bother with the description
#[eddie]But I think that’s a great way to experiment with names without messing up what’s going well

#LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "Angelfire" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Angelfire is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#tantek__Angelfire is http://angelfire.com/ one of the earliest website hosting services, established in 1996, and continuously in operation since. (Examples needed of early Angelfire sites, especially pre-2010, that are still functionally roughly the same as they were)
#LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "1996-sites" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "1996-sites is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#tantek__I want to include indieweb examples vs silo examples
#tantek__though for indieweb examples, I'm having trouble evaluating the "when" year of launch, because indieweb sites tend to have lots of change and churn in functionality
