[KevinMarks] you often have good insights about language / metaphors etc. as well, and the longer context of how we got here through use of various phrases over the years. Thoughts on ^?

Heya folks, it's also the last day of the month, so if anyone has any specific IndieWeb suggestions to forward onto the Redecentralize folks for their monthly newsletter feel free to ping me (or "just" post here 🙂 ) or feel free to email suggestions yourself directly to their hello @ redecentralize.org email address.
#
[tantek]
Here is their digest newsletter from last month if you're wondering what kind of things to suggest including (events, posts, new creations/projects etc.) https://redecentralize.org/redigest/2021/03
#
[tantek]
even major updates to things (e.g. IndieAuth spec [aaronpk] 🙂 ) are worth suggesting. Perhaps a sentence or two especially if you're able to link to a post or the spec/project/event itself for more
#
aaronpk
do we have a wiki page explaining why we disallow github subdomains for wiki login?
#
aaronpk
see main channel
#
aaronpk
also i know we have wiki pages that answer the other questions but i can't find them
#
jjuran
It seems to have devolved into an argument
#
aaronpk
it always does, which is why i was looking for docs
#
[tantek]
yeah we have that somewhere
#
[tantek]
tl;dr: the primary purpose of this community to help folks get their own online identity that they control and use, not to update the IndieWeb wiki. Therefore we prioritize that.
#
[tantek]
lol aaronpk I see where it went south 😂 (also first use of "just" in #indieweb for the day) https://chat.indieweb.org/2021-04-30/1619809373513700
#
aaronpk
darn it! i was trying so hard
#
aaronpk
at least i wasn't using "just" to imply easy
#
[tantek]
I think this is more something to take as a learning example to improve /welcoming
#
Loqi
[aaronpk] if you're running your own personal website with it then you can add yourself as an example here https://indieweb.org/projects or even just make a wiki page for yourself describing the tools you use to publish to your website, see: https://indieweb.o...
#
[tantek]
because in this case they felt like they were steered to something they couldn't "easily" do
#
[tantek]
so I can empathize with the frustration of being told to do something (that kinda skipped or glossed over the non-trivial work of setup for "running your own personal website")

Cook what you want reminds me a little if "Write the book you want to read." (Said by Austin Kleon but others too I'm sure.)
#
[kimberlyhirsh]
But I see in the brainstorming concerns about the gap between desire and technical ability.
#
[tantek]
ooh I like that too [kimberlyhirsh]! I feel I've heard that before / elsewhere as well. That's a good variant example to add.
#
[tantek]
I've also heard, start the podcast that you want to listen to
#
[kimberlyhirsh]
More generically, Create the thing you want to consume.

I like the abstraction from a broader understanding perspective, though then it loses the ease of relating (and positive emotional association) that a metaphor provides
#
[tantek]
which I feel is more important especially for new folks

of all those variants, I think "Cook what you want" is perhaps the most universal / approachable, as everyone wants to eat, and everyone has at least financial (nevermind health etc.) incentives to try to cook/prepare at least some of their food
