What is a manifesto?
#
Loqi
A manifesto is "a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government" according to Wikipedia[1] - in summary there is no IndieWeb(Camp) manifesto https://indieweb.org/manifesto
#
Loqi
ok, I added "https://web0.small-web.org/" to the "See Also" section of /manifesto https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=79197&oldid=50290
#
GWG-
Manifesto always sounds negative to me because of who usually writes them about what
#
capjamesg[d]
This one stood out because it has a lot of signatories compared to most technology manifestos I have see. But yes I agree. I don't usually sign them, nor have I signed the one above.
#
jeremycherfas
That might be a US/UK split. In the UK, one main use of the word is to describe the promises that political parties make to secure election.
#
capjamesg[d]
Good point jeremycherfas.
#

[tantek]1
capjamesg[d] could I trouble you to add IndieWeb relevance to the dfn of this new page? https://indieweb.org/Developer_Experience (per /definition)
#
[tantek]1
what is an image proxy
#
Loqi
An image proxy is a service that fetches and re-serves images from a new URL, useful for IndieWeb sites that for privacy reasons want to avoid making their viewers load images directly from other services https://indieweb.org/image_proxy
#
[tantek]1
^ snarfed, since you recently created video proxy, would you say that's an accurate IndieWeb reason to use an image proxy?
#
capjamesg[d]
[tantek] On reflection, I wonder if we even need that page.
#
[tantek]1
indeed
#
[tantek]1
what is UX
#
Loqi
User experience, often abbreviated as UX, refers to the total experience a user has with a tool, or even an entire company, across all methods of communication and interaction with that tool, including both direct interactions using a tool UI and indirect interactions via other tools such as email, SMS, phone calls, in-person human representatives of the tool or company, etc https://indieweb.org/ux
#
[tantek]1
capjamesg[d] perhaps add a subsection on /UX instead? and then redirect /Developer_Experience to that
#
capjamesg[d]
Good point.
#
jamesg.blog

#
capjamesg[d]
What is developer experience?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "developer experience" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "developer experience is ____", a sentence describing the term)

[snarfed]
[tantek] hmm! no, I definitely wouldn't say privacy is the primary reason to use an image proxy. I'm not even sure it's one of the more common reasons. the old dfn seemed right to me!
#
[snarfed]
(and just to make sure we're on the same page, image and video proxies are primarily developer tools. user tools like VPNs, ad blockers etc are maybe related, but not the same)
#
[snarfed]
we could also just remove those two pages altogether, only minor IndieWeb relevance
#
[tantek]1
use of image proxies has definitely come up many times at IndieWebCamps
#
[tantek]1
so there has been IndieWeb-specific discussion of them
#
[tantek]1
and having IndieWeb Examples is sufficient reason to keep them, we just need to add a summary of their IndieWeb-specific relevance to the dfn
#
[tantek]1
happy to drop the mention of privacy if that's not relevant

not sure i have it in me right now to wordsmith it well, but the main things i think of are: 1. they ensure that media are sized, formatted, and filtered as you like in a declarative way and 2. using them as a cache can help fight link rot for external media (for example in responses and reply contexts)

#

The Open Graph protocol (OGP) is an open* standard developed and controlled by Facebook for expressing the primary subject of an HTML page in custom <meta> tags for the purpose of Facebook showing link previews; in practice only a couple are even sometimes necessary for that use-case, and you can use existing open standards instead https://indieweb.org/open_graph
