↩️ Really sad that the original Web is now known as the "Indie" Web @indiewebcamp . There is also some P2P initiatives with @BeakerBrowser , @AgregoreBrowser based on protocols like @dat_ecosystem , @IPFS , @securescuttleb1 that try to enable people to write and share again.

I've added #webmention support to my site. If you like this tweet (after an hour) your like will show up on the article. managed to shorten the article by releasing a npm module to do much of the heavy lifting. link included. #indieweb #webdev #nodejs https://mikevdv.dev/blog/2022-07-05-web-mentions

I do wonder how these laws affect to independent small businesses and enthusiast / @indiewebcamp solutions Are we fighting the big web companies by making it impossible for anyone but the big web companies to run any kind of web service?

wrt to Pelle’s tweet, the digital services act applies to intermediary service providers (transmission, caching, hosting, and attached online platform for dissemination). Micro and small enterprises are exempted from the reporting and transparency obligations in the DSA (art 13), as well as exempted from obligations imposed on online platforms (Chapter 3 Section 3, arts 17 through 24). What remains is Chapter 2 (rules defining youâ€

generally not liable, but need to comply with court orders), and Chapter 3, Section 1 with obligations to all service providers (like having a contact person, and clearly worded terms of service) and Section 2 (hosting services must have a notification mechanism for receiving messages about potential illegal content, and must communicate reasons for removing access to certain information) Section 4 never applies to small entities,

only to very large online platforms. In total I see that as not burdening any small, independent businesses, nor any IndieWeb services (unless e.g. Brid.gy becomes much much bigger with global reach). The DMA and DSA should be read together, and are mostly geared to levelling the playing field and making it easier to have a diversity of service providers and being able to switch providers, imo.

[tonz] thank you for that! really helpful

I'll probably eventually want to add some language to Bridgy's docs for it, alongside https://brid.gy/about#gdpr . Any tips on what I should say or not say?

[snarfed] IANAL but happy to help (one of my current roles is for the Dutch gov to translate the impact of these laws on large public data holders). The Digital Service Act isn’t finished yet, and last month some new bumps in the road emerged in the EU Parliament. There’s agreement in principle on the text between the Council (ie heads of member states), the Parliament and the Commission, but it still needs final parliamentary

approval. Somewhere to the end of Q3 this year it should get published, and there will be a grace period until either Jan 1st 2024 or 15 months after publication in the EU Journal (whichever is later) (https://eur-lex.europa.eu/oj). So you have 18 months at least to find out what to do / add to the Brid.gy terms.

[snarfed] as I said happy to help out. Perhaps it’s an opportunity in general to document how IndieWeb services are affected by the DMA (not at all) DSA (somewhat) and other building blocks like the AI Reg (not, or only voluntarily), Data Governance Act (perhaps, as opportunity), Data Act (perhaps). Together with the GDPR and the Open Data Directive they form the EU’s geopolitical proposition wrt things digital and data. A single
#
[tonz]
market for data provision and usage is being created, the EU Data space, and by definition anyone doing anything with data in the EU is affected by that. The instruments in the laws mentioned are expressed in that EU Data space as market rules of the road.
#
[tonz]
[snarfed] maybe we can start creating a section in the IndieWeb wiki on this. (similarly I’m documenting these laws in Dutch here for the Dutch public sector: https://gnvm.nl/eu
