Hey folks, per a recent conversation, I noticed that we don't explicitly include "caste" as something for "treating all individuals respectfully, regardless of" in our /code-of-conduct — e.g. the following Codes of Conduct do include it explicitly: Mozilla CPG, W3C CEPC, Drupalcon, and Mastodon Server (all listed in our /code-of-conduct-examples.
#
jacky
that's an excellent call out
#
[tantek]
What do folks here think of explicitly listing caste in the second paragraph in the "Respect" section? (and while at it, explicitly listing "race" which we somehow overlooked there though we mention racism lower down in the doc)
#
[tantek]
e.g. this change: s|nationality, ethnicity|nationality, caste, race and/or ethnicity|
#
[tantek]
that last phrase "race and/or ethnicity" is from the list in https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/governance/policies/participation/
#
[tantek]
also open to re-ordering, e.g. |race and/or ethnicity, caste, nationality|
#
[tantek]
thoughts? preferences? I'd like to add "caste" to that list, and am open to either ordering listed above if someone has a preference
#

+1 for adding, no particular opinion on ordering

+1 for adding… and I think the second ordering maps more closely to my mental model of those concepts (but I am absolutely no expert!)
#
[tantek]
the second ordering is also taken from the order in the list in the Mozilla CPG
#
[tantek]
will leave this open for 24hrs for folks to comment, and if there are no objections and a clear expression of preference for a particular ordering, I'll make the additions/changes to the code of conduct accordingly

thanks sknebel, campegg, jacky. I realized I should write this up in our "feedback" page so we have the background/proposal/opinions captured there. https://indieweb.org/code-of-conduct-feedback#Add_caste_to_respectfully_list
