for news.indieweb.org, who should be allowed to delete posts? same policy as the wiki and events? anyone who logs in?
#
[tantek]
maybe some sort of minimal moderation queue that still allows posts to show up here, and perhaps when you’re "logged in" to IndieNews, but not "public" (until 2+ folks have "approved" a post maybe?)
#
aaronpk
i hadn't considered flipping it to moderation before things appear on the site
#
[tantek]
it feels "easier" (less politeness burden) for the community frankly
#
[tantek]
rather than someone complaining hey why/who deleted my post
#
gRegor
Maybe an allowlist for previously-approved domains
#
aaronpk
the approval could be for the domain
#
[tantek]
maybe? I mean there's enough of us in chat that see the IndieNews posts that a "simple" 2+ upvote threshold might be enough
#
gRegor
e.g. a previously approved post from aaronpk.com, so new posts from there auto-approved
#
[tantek]
also it would help mitigate unintended syndication automation errors by default
#
gRegor
agreed, my idea is a yes-and
#
[tantek]
why is it any different that the 2+ approvals for retweets from @IndieWebCamp?
#
aaronpk
i don't think we've had instances of accidental syndication after someone has intentionally syndicated a post
#
[tantek]
I feel like we had one or two of those
#
[tantek]
they flipped a setting to "make IndieNews work", posted something IndieWeb relevant, then much later posted something not IndieWeb but the setting was a global syndication destination (a la Twitter POSSE) so it errantly posted again
#
[tantek]
we also have similar thresholds for # of wiki edits before an edited page shows up in the newsletter
#
aaronpk
hm true
#
aaronpk
is that a newsletter threshold or showing up on news.indieweb.org threshold tho
#
[tantek]
I feel like it could be a "showing up on the homepage of indienews" threshold vs. an "all" list that could be more comprehensive
#
[tantek]
the typical "reader" of the home page would benefit from some degree of filtering/curation, and the few folks that want to "see *everything*" (perhaps to help upvote etc.) can go to a separate page for that
#
[tantek]
in this regard, the newsletter is "just" a snapshot in time of what should be "public" anyway, so I think the "smarts" belong upstream at IndieNews
#
aaronpk
hmm this is rapidly growing in scope
#
gRegor
I like 2+ chat approvals to appear as an mvp

[tantek] Good call.
#
capjamesg
I can create it?
#
capjamesg
gRegor I'd love your feedback. I tried to make the code general enough that it would be tolerant of any Etherpad's contents (i.e. not looking for --- delimiters).
#
gRegor
capjamesg, only small thing I noticed is "was an IndieWeb meetup on Zoom" as the template, but that's fine for the foreseeable future of HWC meetups. Would just make small tweaks for IWC sessions if/when those happen again
#
gRegor
But as-is it will make archiving a grid of IWC sessions much faster
#
[tantek]
we don't have a how to about using and creating Category: pages, perhaps we could use that

To create the category page I added [[Category:Bots]] to a page, opened the red link, then saved it as a blank page.
#
[tantek]
except they're not plural when applied to each page
#
capjamesg
The saving as a blank page isn't very intuitive because you have to say "save" twice as the text box for the page is blank.
#
[tantek]
what is our existing naming of categories?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "our existing naming of categories" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "our existing naming of categories is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
capjamesg
[[Category:Bot]] more appropriate?
#
[tantek]
I'm not sure if we have a convention or not

I'm thinking about creating a Spanish language specific "Posts about the IndieWeb" page 🤔
#
sknebel
that sounds like an excellent idea to collect language-specific content
petermolnar joined the channel
#
[tantek]
aciccarello, start here: https://indieweb.org/#Translations 🙂
#
[aciccarello]
Yeah, I was looking at https://indieweb.org/how-to-start-new-translation and I don't see any recommendations on how to highlight pages in other languages.
#
[aciccarello]
Currently Spanish only has the main page. Essentially all the links on that page go to english language pages. If a Spanish speaker goes to that page there's nothing to indicate what links are available in their language.
nertzy joined the channel
#
[aciccarello]
Conversely, I don't see any recommendation on how to link between languages. For example, I don't see a link from /principles to /principles-fr
#
[aciccarello]
I know wikipedia has ways to list page translations in the sidebar.
#
sknebel
hm, at least for high-profile pages like that we should probably have links
#
sknebel
on the page
#
[aciccarello]
I'm surprised the translated pages aren't categorized or searchable by something. Maybe they are and my mediawiki skills are limited.
#
gRegor
It looks like wikipedia is using the wiki families to link same pages across wikis in sidebar
#
sknebel
and wikidata nowadays
#
gRegor
Not sure if the interlanguage links will work for us since we've usually suffixed the lang in the page name instead of prefix like "es:page"
#
gRegor
but haven't read that doc in depth
#
sknebel
interwiki links are really between different wikis, not just prefixes afaik?
#
sknebel
so doesnt apply either way
#
sknebel
putting non-english pages in a category for their language might be an easy start
#
gRegor
terminology is confusing, interlanguage appears to be using different wikis configured on subdomains
#
sknebel
yeah, its a generic thing they also use for languages
#
sknebel
and again, afaik nowadays languages on wikipedia go through wikidata
#
sknebel
so something else entirely, specific to wikipedia et al
