Gonna figure out how to bookmark this on my site for indienews but this segment of a recent shoptalk interview with the creator of feedbin is extremely relevant! https://overcast.fm/+P2WxBr5og/23:09
#
[tantek]
oooh, any hopes of Microsub support 👀
#
[schmarty]
Micropub maybe. A tl;dr for that segment might be "google reader had comments and social stuff, what's that on feedbin? Start your own blog with a feed and share that with your friends and write about each others' posts"
#
[schmarty]
JSONFeed also came up later.

[tantek]
google reader did not really have social stuff. that's a bit of revisionism
#
aaronpk
didn't it have a way to cmoment on posts that your friends could see?
#
aaronpk
i think that safely falls under the vague "social stuff"
#
[schmarty]
yes, you could share items (to your
#
[schmarty]
"shared item feed" where others could follow it) and comments could be made on those items. https://web.archive.org/web/20151207114457/https://www.wired.com/2009/03/google-reader-s/
#
[KevinMarks]
I remember having to deal with the press when the shared item feeds were made discoverable
#
[KevinMarks]
(they had really opaque looking urls, so people had assumed that they were private.)
#
[tantek]
Was this the "starred items in Google Reader show up publicly somewhere" thing?
#
[tantek]
Didn't realize those items them allowed comments of their own. how odd
#
[KevinMarks]
That was the point where we had standard models for activity streams (pre the external group) and were adding them to sensible places in google products, before the 'lets make our own facebook' project took over
#
[tantek]
and in between those two was Buzz right?
#
[tantek]
Google Reader shared starred items -> Google Buzz -> Google+
#
[tantek]
with Wave somewhere in there
#
[KevinMarks]
Google had many parallel product teams, yes
#
[KevinMarks]
Buzz was activity streams for gmail, but they crossed the streams by using google chat/addressbook connections as a friend proxy. Which was not a good mapping and earned them an FTC decree
#
[KevinMarks]
Wave was an entirely parallel effort led out of Australia by the ex Google Maps engineers
#
[KevinMarks]
there was an ML team in Israel that kept trying to derive friend graphs from chat/email etc - I helped swat them away a few times on other projects but they talked the Buzz team into using their thing and it was dangerous as it assumed that connections were symmetric and transitive when they clearly weren't (it worked OK if your entire social life was co-workers, which I assume was their mental model)
