hah yes we should update that "no good federated networks", fortunately that has changed since that was written 🙂

[tantek]
mailinglists--
#
Loqi
mailinglists has -1 karma over the last year
#

[tantek]: Why, what's wrong with NNTP, XMPP, SMTP or SIP? 😉 They all have their merits and I'm sure you can find books on most of them. They weren't created to serve publishing use cases, though, unlike OpenMicroBlogging.
#
[tantek]
Haha yes each of those deserves its own specific criticism
#
[tantek]
NNTP is kinda the last non crappy survivor there
#
bkil
Also, I understand that a mailing list itself is just a badly discoverable centralized system, but you could actually implement better mailing lists and forums over SMTP. Delta.Chat did progress in the right direction about that, although I would have a few innovative ideas about taking it to the next level of decentralization.

Could you please pin this link to the description of every channel? https://indieweb.org/discuss#Chat_Channels_Purposes

+1 aaronpk
#
[tantek]
bkil, do you mean description of every channel on IRC? perhaps someone on IRC can help with that?
#
bkil
Yes, that's my suggestion. The same text is bridged to the matrix room as well automatically.

Please see https://indieweb.org/discuss for channel purposes and logging policies. Code of conduct: https://indieweb.org/code-of-conduct

Thanks! 👏
#
[tantek]
It's a good reason to review our Slack channel descriptions too
#
[tantek]
Here's the #indieweb-meta channel description from Slack:
#
[tantek]
Community, site infra, events & planning, wiki gardening, chat about chat. More: https://indieweb.org/discuss#Chat_Channels_Purposes. Archive: https://chat.indieweb.org/meta
#
[tantek]
^ if that looks good, can someone propagate it to the IRC channel description?
#
gRegor
It was an irc command, so it did update, though it shows as a regular chat line in logs
#
gRegor
nvm, misread

things that need to go into the topic: channel purpose, code of conduct, logs
#
aaronpk
anything else?
#
[tantek]
sounds good to me
#
aaronpk
if you want the channel purpose as text in the topic, we need to come up with short versions of each channel that can fit along with the other links
#
[tantek]
I wonder if we should capture these as "copy/paste" summaries in the /discuss page so folks can "repair/restore" them across IRC server restarts / netsplits etc.

3. Imperfection & learning in public Gardens are imperfect by design. They don't hide their rough edges or claim to be a permanent source of truth. They're more coherent than chat feeds, but less polished than a blog post – in between chaos streams and cultivated performance https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E2ffjy-XMAgOeqz.jpg

I’ve been tended a long post on the history of “Digital Gardening” over the last year. From @holden's original essay to the recent explosion of community experiments. 🌿 https://maggieappleton.com/garden-history Included six design patterns I see as unifying qualities across gardens: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E2fd4m-WEAIXFaL.jpg
