I had another idea about channel names.
#
capjamesg
We could have #indieweb-protocols for all talk protocols.
#
capjamesg
And dev becomes all about the coding of making websites.
#
capjamesg
Anything Webmention would be in protocols, for example. Anything HTML/CSS/JS/DNS, etc. would be in dev.

Oh I kind of like that

Do we need a meeting for that idea? I'm still confused about how we decide about things as a community and I've been here...well, 10 years as of today actually.
#

Happy 10 year anniversary!
#
GWG
I scheduled a post for later on it
#
aaronpk
Add it to the wiki!
#
capjamesg
GWG We don't need a meeting, but we do need to give people time to weigh in either in chat, at HWC, or on the wiki. If there is sufficient community interest, we can start experimenting and set a precedent for use.
#
aaronpk
The other ideas already have some votes
#
GWG
Where in the wiki is that?

[tantek]
I think the suggestion of the "indieweb-protocols" is missing the social dynamic of what we already have to deal with
#
[tantek]
like completely
#
[tantek]
it is *hard* to get protocol talking folks to move from #indieweb to #indieweb-dev
#
[tantek]
that is today's reality
#
[tantek]
even people / experts / experienced / organizer folks here repeatedly make the mistake, like repeatedly of bringing up or answering protocol questions in main, when they should know better and should be redirecting those conversations to #indieweb-dev
#
[tantek]
the exact same problem will happen with trying to move protocol talk from #indieweb-dev to a new indieweb-protocols channel
#
[tantek]
it won't just magically work because you create a channel with the name
#
[tantek]
also the problem isn't protocols/formats vs other dev. the problem is frontend vs all the backend futzing around
#
[tantek]
the creative skills for HTML + microformats, CSS, some JS, building UIs is *very* different from backend plumbing, server config, server installations, etc., and the latter topics is what turns off folks working on the former topics
#
[tantek]
if we create a new channel for the former topics, we provide a "safe(r) space" for folks that want to focus on entry-level HTML+mf2+CSS+JS, and all the dev-folks can stay where they are and have as deep and quirky chats about any dev talk as they want
#
[tantek]
whereas getting dev-folks to move from #indieweb-dev to a new protocols channel will be A LOT MORE continuous community labor

cryptocurrency << criticism: {{t}}: we should stop calling it proof of work (POW) because "work" generally implies something productive and useful is being done, while in the case of performing a bunch of random math just to show that you have and for no other reason is a waste of energy. Hence let's call it "proof of squandering energy recklessly" (POSER) because as elsewhere documented, such energy usage is displacing actually directly
#
[tantek]
human useful energy usage, and contributing to carbon emissions directly or indirectly, which is reckless for the whole planet

ok, I added "criticism: {{t}}: we should stop calling it proof of work (POW) because "work" generally implies something productive and useful is being done, while in the case of performing a bunch of random math just to show that you have and for no other reason is a waste of energy.
