Considering adding this to the "coming up in 5 days!" email that I'm drafting to have Marc send out ASAP, what would people think of something like this (especially if they got it after signing up for an event) ?
#
[tantek]
"IndieWebCamp strongly encourages and supports a diverse and inclusive environment. Please especially consider inviting your friends who are a different gender or have a different background than yourself."
#
[tantek]
^ do folks think that would help, harm, or not impact diversity at an IndieWebCamp?
#
[tantek]
especially curious to hear from organizers who have experience with successfully organizing more diverse events

[tantek] I think an explicit recommendation to invite people of different backgrounds would be a good reminder. But I'm squarely in the majority of most demographics so I'm probably not the best judge.

thanks aciccarello. part of this is trying to do at least some additional work to be explicitly inclusive, rather than just "default welcoming". it takes work to shift a community to be more diverse and heterogeneous and I for one think it's worth organizer time & effort to do so
#
[aciccarello]
I agree and also would like to prioritize that effort.
#
[aciccarello]
I think it'd be great for IWCs to invite more creatives outside of software.
#
GWG
I've still failed in my 2018 assignment to make more diverse friends in person. Of course, I've failed in my personal assignment to make more friends in general...it's been a tough few years.
#
[tantek]
GWG, keep up the efforts, it's hard work but it does eventually produce results
#
[aciccarello]
Shout out to Tracy Durnell. She has made some really good IndieWeb adjacent posts that aren't just about how to build things. I'd love to see more perspectives like hers.
#
GWG
I think Tracy is an asset to a community that sometimes gets too into the weeds.

GWG, you may wish to consider rephrasing that statement because it could be misinterpreted as saying that Tracy herself gets too into the weeds, which I'm sure you didn't mean to say 🙂
#
GWG
Good point
#
GWG
I think the community does sometimes and Tracy is a good counterpoint to that.
#
GWG
I unfortunately, like the weeds
#
[tantek]
That's ok, that's what we have the #indieweb-dev channel for 😂
#
GWG
So, it is personally helpful to be brought out of them
#

Isn't that what angelo's scythe is for, trimming the weeds? :D
#

May's "Social Norms in the IndieWeb" asked great questions about the human meaning of this stuff. https://indieweb.org/events/2024-05-18-hwc-social-norms

I have seen angelo's driving...I'm worried about him with a scythe.

[Joe_Crawford] on a recent HWC notes archive I added subsection headings by topic to make it easier to browse/find/link things after the fact
#
[tantek]
Might be just me, but I have difficulty reading many screenfuls of otherwise indistinguishable text like in that social norms wiki archive. Curious if anyone else has such challenges (could be a cognitive accessibility thing?)
#
[Joe_Crawford]
I strive to format the FrESH notes for that reason.
#
[tantek]
Example of HWC notes with subsection headings added *after the fact* (which should be fine IMO, to avoid getting distracted by organizing notes during the HWC, but also helpful if folks think of it during) https://indieweb.org/events/2024-10-23-hwc-europe#Notes
#
[tantek]
[Joe_Crawford] if there are some best practices we can recommend, perhaps we can summarize in a "how to" somewhere?
#
[tantek]
Do we have an obvious place for "how to"s for HWCs?
#
gRegor
Probably in https://indieweb.org/Homebrew_Website_Club#Running_the_event, or linked out from there if it needs its own page/section

#
[Joe_Crawford]
A callout in the "After the event" would be an appropriate addition. I can commit to looking at that social norms page in the next 2 weeks. I did get a lot out of it. I feel like there were some blog posts about it too but I may just be making that up.
