Tantek, I conferred with some other people and have organized some thoughts about the Getting Started page.
#
[tantek]2
I mean, this chat channel is the right place to confer with people
#
[tantek]2
on topics like the wiki
#
osteophage
I conferred with some other people who aren't here. Can the bridge handle bullet points?
#
[tantek]2
chats tend to work better one topic at a time rather than a dump.
#
osteophage
Okay, one thing at a time.
#
[tantek]2
if you'd prefer, a bunch of use use subpages of our /User: pages to collect longer more structured thoughts like lists
#
[tantek]2
that also allows folks to see the points all in context if you think that would help communicate them better

Thing one: for the Getting Started page, the page title and intro set up expectation of sequential steps for getting started, and then what appears next on the page is not actually formatted or composed in terms of sequential steps.
#
osteophage
To address this I'm thinking of revising the intro but also suggesting cuts elsewhere on the page, in order to make the page overall feel more focused.
#
[tantek]2
osteophage, true! Sounds familiar. Take a look at the See Also section where similar points have been captured and see if you can perhaps build on that past work when points overlap? https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started#See_Also
#
[tantek]2
Did you get a chance to read the https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started#See_Also section before you chatted with the other people who aren't here?
#
osteophage
Yes. I think some of the to-dos there are compatible with other things I want to recommend.
#
[tantek]2
When you find items in the See Also you agree with, could you perhaps add a nested list item underneath with a "+1" and your name?
#
[tantek]2
Thank you in advance! Really good to have a fresh pair of eyes on this
#
[tantek]2
I think such "+1"s may help us at least get some momentum to move some of those forward
#
osteophage
I would prefer to go ahead and make those edits directly, if there's enough consensus. On that note - does the wiki have a talk page?
#
gRegor
No talk pages. We usually keep it to chat, etherpads (which end up as wiki pages), or User: sub-pages like tantek described
#
osteophage
I see. That's very different from what I'm used to, but good to know.

I set up a sandbox page for various things, e.g. trying to rewrite this bit of intro stuff that has been confusing in the past: https://indieweb.org/User:Gregorlove.com/sandbox#How_to_set_up_a_personal_template
#
[social]
I had just gone through the chatname setup, which followed having had my username setup, then added my profile about a month prior to setting up the chatname.
#

If you want a sounding board or second set of eyes, let me know.
#
[tantek]2
osteophage, such +1s on the wiki are how we have async determined "enough consensus", that's why I suggested it
#
[tantek]2
Btw these "other people who aren't here" were they devs or not, and did they already have their domains or not?
#
[tantek]2
I ask because the anecdotal feedback we've gotten to date from folks depends A LOT on such factors. Different people get stuck in different ways
#
osteophage
Currently working on setting up my list of thoughts on my user page.
#
[tantek]2
Awesome! Also helpful
#
osteophage
The other people I was referring to were a couple of my personal friends and a few other folks in my social circle. Some of their backgrounds I don't know. I know one of them has a Github account and has worked on web dev projects before, and I know another of them has just recently started a personal site. My thinking is that the Getting Started page is a very forward-facing page that's presented to newcomers (as demonstrate

Anyway, my notes are mostly about compositional stuff, which happens to be what I have more of a background in myself. Should have prefaced with that, I guess.
#
[tantek]2
osteophage++ thank you for writing these up and adding the +1s!! Super helpful. I'll try to make some time later or maybe tomorrow to garden the See Also section a bit into specific improvement proposals to encourage more folks to support

what is People Scanning QR Codes?
#
Loqi
People Scanning QR Codes was a Tumblr at peoplescanningqrcodes.tumblr/.com that documented photos of people scanning QR codes in the wild, until some time in 2021 at which point it was replaced by a mortgage spam Tumblr https://indieweb.org/People_Scanning_QR_Codes
#
doesnm
not indieweb problem itself, many normal sites starting timeout
#
[tantek]2
what is outage
#
Loqi
outage also known as down as in the opposite of "up" in the context of the indieweb, and refers to an interruption to a service or server, when it is not responding as it should, which could mean its DNS is not resolving, or the server is not responding, or it is responding with a particular error such as a 502 Bad Gateway https://indieweb.org/outage
