[snarfed]
have we talked about Discord editing here recently? any thoughts on revisiting that?
#
[snarfed]
it can get pretty spammy when people edit a message a lot, which seems to happen regularly
#
[snarfed]
obviously we'd hate for people to edit messages and think we see the edits when we don't. but re-sending the message on each edit isn't great either
#
doesnm
maybe discord should have bridge to slack? so editing will synced
#
doesnm
now it's discord<->irc<->slack i think
#
aaronpk
Last I checked there's no setting to turn off edits in discord
#
[mattl]
I think when we see it we should ask that person to not do it and explain why. Maybe Loqi could even do it?
#
doesnm
[mattl]: maybe fix the problem, not symptoms?
#
jodie.website
created /User:Jodie.website (+220) "profile of jodie.website"
(view diff)
#
[mattl]
doesnm: how?
#
doesnm
[mattl]: posted above, bridge discord and slack directly
#
[snarfed]
the big hammer would be to just stop the bridge from sending edits
#
[mattl]
Discord has no interest in adding a permission to restrict editing. People have asked for years and every time they do they get shut down.
#
doesnm
<[mattl]> Discord has no interest in adding a permission to restrict editing. People have asked for years and every time they do they get shut down. <- very bad idea. Same as restrict deleting messagsa
#
[mattl]
doesnm: and IRC or the web chat?
#
doesnm
[mattl]: IRC doesn't support editing, idk about webchat. I mean bridge slack&discord and bridge irc to one of them. So it can look like slack<->discord<->irc
#
[mattl]
I know IRC doesn’t support editing. We should not support editing IMO.
#
[snarfed]
right. but that still begs the question about what to do for platforms like Discord that are bridged in and do allow edits
#
[snarfed]
re-sending the messages, like now, is spammy. ignoring them misleads people on Discord. neither is great
#
[mattl]
Yeah I think just asking people to not do it when they do it works best. It’s already on the discuss page.
#
[snarfed]
the etiquette there is tough. I'm with you in spirit, but in practice we get spammy edits often, and we almost never say anything
#
[mattl]
If we started saying something or having Loqi do it, for a week or two I wonder if it would improve things. We can’t catch it every time but Loqi presumably can.
#
aaronpk
I don't like the idea of silently ignoring the edits either
#
[mattl]
Yeah I think that’s going to be a problem pretty quickly.
#
aaronpk
I think a Loqi reminder might be the best bet
#
aaronpk
the other annoying thing is discord sends edits out when they add the link preview to a message. that one might be able to be stopped in the discord bridge tho.
#
[tantek]
It's already documented in /discuss right?
#
aaronpk
yes with a ⚠️ ⚠️ notice too
#
[mattl]
I think Loqi greeting people when they join and asking them not to edit posts when they do would be two features that would dramatically improve things.
#
[mattl]
But I’m also not trying to give Aaron more work
#
Loqi
Generated a new draft of the newsletter! https://indieweb.org/this-week/2025-08-08.html
#
[tantek]
We could put it explicitly in the welcome message on Discord and link to the longer explanation on /discuss
#
[mattl]
That would be good but I’m also talking about a general greeting. If you enter the chat in the middle of the night in the US there’s often nobody here
#
aaronpk
there isn't a "join" event in the bridge, so it would only work by having Loqi respond to a chat message
#
aaronpk
but that could also be fun. Loqi is already aware of general level of chat activity, so Loqi could respond if someone says something after 2+ hours of no chatter
#
aaronpk
but avoid barging in to the middle of a conversation
#
[mattl]
That sounds great.

what is bangalore
#
Loqi
Bangalore is a city in Karnataka, India that started having regular IndieWebClub meetings from May 2025 https://indieweb.org/Bangalore
#
[tantek]
still waiting to see a sign of (human) life from that beyond the events / blog posts (i.e. photos or some more evidence)
#
[tantek]
am hopeful that will emerge at some point
#
[mattl]
that would be very cool.
#
[tantek]
I'm too bot/AI-skeptical about today's web to trust anything text-only any more
#
gRegor
I thought I linked a blog post, which mentioned the meeting in passing from an organizer. More of a general life update post
#
[mattl]
It would be neat some day to have a 24 hour indieweb meeting, although I worry about anyone staying up for the whole thing.
#
[tantek]
rotating hosts could work for that
#
[mattl]
rotating countries too. We’d have to set some ground rules. Like “only x cups of coffee per timezone per person”
#
gRegor
Seems unlikely they would create the underline events, post on events.indieweb, and mention in a blog post if not human :)

[tantek]
hey all, if you organized or hosted an IndieWeb event in the past 12 months, check to make sure you're listed here: https://indieweb.org/Organizers#Recent_Organizers (and in the right list, like active on chat or not) and with the accurate list of events you helped organize over the past 12 months.
#
[tantek]
If you helped organize an event, the event description should explicitly list you by name as an organizer or host. None of this "the usual crowd/suspects" anonymous stuff.
#
[tantek]
I estimate perhaps a ~90% accuracy to my first attempt there, almost certainly missing 1-2 people
#
[mattl]
Does that include online events?
#
[tantek]
yes, online events that list the organizers by name (so they can be contacted e.g. for Code of Conduct reasons etc.)
#
[mattl]
I’ll add myself for HWC Eastern

part of the goal here is to have clear names of organizers both in each event and in that Recent list for general handling of online chat / code of conduct type stuff, and even when it seems good faith disagreement is somehow escalating instead of de-escalating

what is a page
#
Loqi
page is short for a web page on the IndieWeb, and is usually primarily known by its name (AKA named page), served at the top level of a site (AKA slash page), and kept updated in place in contrast to posts which are primarily datetime-based; a page that is browser-editable with viewable revisions is a wiki-page https://indieweb.org/page
