[snarfed]should we consider an AI channel? I get that it is somewhat indieweb relevant, at least narrow specific bits like managing crawlers and whether/how to use LLMs as writing aids...but it's a pretty consistent conversation topic in #indieweb and #indieweb-dev these days, way more than it seems warranted for indieweb relevance, at least to me
gRegormixed feelings, though not strong. initially I feel like yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing less of it :D but then also wonder if it's encouraging it more. again, not strong feelings.
gRegor[artlung], one note about moving, moved pages won't show up in the newsletter unfortunately. Sometimes copying the contents, deleting the page, then creating the correct one may be preferable if you want it in the newsletter
[snarfed]I originally suspected that would be trickier, since we'd have to try to draw lines, even fuzzy ones, for which AI conversations are on topic and ok...but I guess we'd have to do that anyway to know what to send to #ai
LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "responsible invention" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "responsible invention is ____", a sentence describing the term)
[tantek][snarfed] gRegor I can see many use-cases for a separate # ai channel, not the least of which is a quarantining of sorts to keep the other "main" channels relatively ai-free. and a place for AI skeptics/abolitionists to either ignore, or place their critiques, instead of that also leaking into other channels. I would lean towards it if only to perhaps marginally improve the positivity of other channels
[tantek]one risk is that its existence is seen as some sort of tacit promotion of it by the indieweb community, which I'm not sure how to mitigate. another risk is that it may attract / encourage *more* ai-focused/only chats which may then occasionally bleed back into the other channels
[snarfed]I guess, instead of jumping to a proposed solution, I should have just started with my complaint that I'd like to see less ongoing AI debates/rants in the main channels
gRegorYeah, that tacit promotion is kinda what I was getting at. Plus just the additional overhead of one more channel for organizers to keep an eye on. I myself probably wouldn't join the channel
[tantek]it's a reasonable proposed solution for that use-case which I tend to lean towards as well. want to add it as a proposed new channel section in https://indieweb.org/discuss#other_new_channels and we can collect some async votes/opinions to see if there's broader support?
Loqielsewhere is a common IndieWeb building block, both on homepages for linking to other aspects of your identity elsewhere, and on posts for linking to copies of your posts elsewhere https://indieweb.org/elsewhere
[snarfed]I'm usually mildly -1 on new channels in general, I kinda prefer to avoid the fragmentation. my complaint here about AI talk is more that I'm not interested and it feels mostly off topic, not that I want it and I want to do it in a new channel
[mattl]Yeah I would not join an AI channel and would rather that discussion happened elsewhere. I want to avoid seeing the output of these things as they’re built on (my/others) stolen work.
tantek.comedited /discuss (+429) "/* AI naming */ +1 for clearing up existing channels, and being inclusive/welcoming of more new folks who may want to at least have a discussion to get a better understanding in the context of the indieweb (also useful for folks looking for help blocking scrapers etc.)" (view diff)
[tantek][mattl] I believe there are enough positive use-cases (e.g. helping people block scrapers, providing alternative non-LLM tools) that outweigh the negative of having an explicit channel. we could scope the name accordingly. also I expect more and more new folks showing up will be somewhere between AI-curious and AI-positive, and a channel where whoever is there can help walk through critical discussions may be more welcoming than just
[tantek]personally I'd rather keep them out of a general indieweb-support channel, that's the point. so folks who really don't want to hear about them at all in the other indieweb channels don't have to
LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "bockchain" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "bockchain is ____", a sentence describing the term)
Loqi🐔 chicken is a type of post supported by idnoKnown, and were initially a proof of concept for post-type plugin development, but high levels of chicken interest in the community has driven further development https://indieweb.org/bockchain
[snarfed]re the AI channel, I was actually hoping to redirect most of our current *negative* AI conversations there. I didn't really expect it to foster much positive conversation 😆
[tantek][snarfed] I think per the points [mattl] has made, there is a desire to shunt the "normalizing" of AI/LLM things to its own channel as well, so that seems fitting to put both in one channel? cleans up the noise for lots of us 🙂
