aaronpk we saw a massive spike at work today.
#
capjamesg
All under browser user agents I think.
#

It looked like it persisted for a few hours then went down.

I haven’t seen any of these on my server but I never check the logs. I feel like I need a proper alerting system now.

That's nuts
#
doesnm
damn crawlers
#
aaronpk
i'm seriously considering an nginx rule to block logged-out requests to `/wiki/index.php`
#
aaronpk
a lot of this traffic is clearly crawlers crawling the "view history" and "diff" URLs, all which are a huge waste for everyone
#
[artlung]
Sounds like a reasonable response. Are there any tools that depend on inspecting those pages logged out? If not worth a try. I'd be real curious to see if you see a measurable drop in load.
#
[tantek]2
I believe I have seen such blocks on other MediaWikis
#
aaronpk
i think as long as the main pages are visible and login works, that's all i care about for logged-out visitors
#
[tantek]2
agreed, that's what's cited
#
[tantek]2
I checked a few other Mediawikis in private browsing mode and was able to view history when logged out so I'm guessing they're either using other solutions or haven't been hit yet
#
[tantek]2
I'm guessing this is also causing newsletter generation to silently fail today?
#
aaronpk
oh weird, i wonder what that's about
#
aaronpk
hmm, it's working everywhere except the home page
#
aaronpk
undoing that for now
#
aaronpk
not sure about the newsletter tho
#
aaronpk
ooh, it's getting an error on one of the events
#
aaronpk
i bet cloudflare is blocking it 😂
#
[tantek]2
sigh

Generated a new draft of the newsletter! https://indieweb.org/this-week/2025-08-15.html
#
aaronpk
maybe not
#
aaronpk
it's always erroring on the same düsseldorf event
#
aaronpk
i made it skip errors
#
[tantek]2
huh
#
aaronpk
it's getting an http 400 from the events site for taht event
#
aaronpk
I know other events have had ü in the URL and I don't think that's caused the newsletter to break before

I checked a few other Mediawikis in private browsing mode and they seemed to all allow not logged in access to history. Will see if I can remember where I saw history blocked for non logged in users
