What is alt text?
#
Loqi
alt is a required attribute of the <img> element and should be provided in any use of images on indieweb pages from photo posts to featured and other images in articles https://indieweb.org/alt_text
#
capjamesg
alt text << {{capjamesg}} wrote about how he built a button to show/hide alt text visually on images on his website in "[https://jamesg.blog/2025/08/17/alt-text-button Developing an alt text button for images on my website]"
#

ok, I added "{{capjamesg}} wrote about how he built a button to show/hide alt text visually on images on his website in "[https://jamesg.blog/2025/08/17/alt-text-button Developing an alt text button for images on my website]"" to the "See Also" section of /alt https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=103373&oldid=96208

Sorry, I couldn't find a page named "[edit] alt text" or similar

What is web bot auth?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "web bot auth" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "web bot auth is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
capjamesg
What is a robot?
#
Loqi
🤖 robots are automated scripts that crawl, search, or perform requests for information https://indieweb.org/robot

And I don't think I appreciated this category before https://indieweb.org/Category:PostType

Always wondered if it was one word or two. That answers that!
#
[artlung]
I agonized a little over that. Front-End vs Front end vs frontend vs Frontend

[aaronpk] [tantek] I think we can put another bot in the Discord channel and they can stop the double post when a URL is posted. I don’t know if that has been considered.

aaronpk
Got any docs?

Not sure it can? Bc in discord the edit is a feature to show the link preview. So really it's a bridge issue not a Discord issue
#
aaronpk
As far as I know it's the discord API itself sending out the edit, and discord doesn't allow turning off edits, so I don't see how another bot can help

[aaronpk] this in the server settings for the Discord server without a bot can also do it, apparently.

Settings > Roles > Default Permissions

I have just toggled on that setting.

How can I test it works?

capjamesg: are you the admin on the server? double check any permissions for admins too and then post a URL to anything.
#
capjamesg
Will do.
#
capjamesg
Ahh I can't undo the setting for admins.
#
[mattl]
maybe another admin can but let me try and join the server for a moment.
#
[mattl]
That seems to work?
#
tantek.com
Yup no preview in Discord
#
[mattl]
and no [edit] in Slack
#
[mattl]
That should help a lot.
