Open Library is an Internet Archive project to create a page for every book, and provide cover images and the ability to borrow or read as many as possible https://indieweb.org/openlibrary

Just tried that ^ it's no frills and a bit rough, but if the barcode is in the OL collection, it should work. Point and scan and the results stack up in a small section bottom of the screen which you can scroll left to right. Click on one and it takes you to the OL page for the book.

what is a group blog
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "group blog" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "group blog is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
huh thought we had pages on that
#
[tantek]
capjamesg[d] I don't think that's the established common term for that

multi-author sounds academic.
#
capjamesg
"collaborative" (or co-...) sounds like people are doing something together.
#
capjamesg
co-authoring is probably the closest established term I can think of, but it also sounds a bit academic 😂

#
[tantek]
capjamesg there is a prior reference to multiauthor blog on the wiki tbh
#
[tantek]
"collaborative blogging" sounds like a mouthful
#
[tantek]
like I don't think it's actually a "thing"
#
[tantek]
if it was, I suspect someone would have shortened it to "co-blogging"
#
[tantek]
like "co-working" 😆
#
[Al_Abut]
Maybe it’s a fun trend that comes and goes? Just like coworking 😉
#
[tantek]
yes I'm sure it's a trend that comes and goes, my point is, there was an earlier phrase / term for this that was shorter IIRC
#
capjamesg
I have cited three independent blog posts that explicitly mention the term "collaborative blogging".
#
capjamesg
Two from 2022, one from 2025.
#
[tantek]
huh I just saw the one
#
capjamesg
"I have interviewed one hundred and six of them for People and Blogs (which, btw, is a collaborative blogging project"
#
[tantek]
regardless it sounds like a new term for a mid-2000s phenomenon that already had a name
#
capjamesg
Just calling out that this is not a particularly fun discussion. Being told "huh thought we had pages on that" as the first response to creating a wiki page is not a good response for someone taking time to make a page.
#
[tantek]
capjamesg[d], how would you handle creation of a new page that may be about the same thing as an existing page?
#
[tantek]
because the end result of that is much worse for readers, duplication and confusion
#
[tantek]
and makes the wiki less fun and accessible
#
capjamesg
If you think the content should be elsewhere, etc. feel free to move it.
#
[tantek]
I wasn't certain which is why I asked as questions!
#
[tantek]
I think it's better to approach such things with curiosity, questions than certainty ("should")
#
[tantek]
the only change I'd suggest with some certainty is lowercase "collaborative blogging" since it's not a proper noun
#
capjamesg
co-blogging sounds okay and is close to "co-writing" which I used to refer to this earlier this year, but I haven't seen anyone mention co-blogging specifically in the community recently, but we have had specifically the word "collaborative" pop up at HWCs in the past, including, as cited, a brief mention in a HWC writing workshop from 2024.
#
capjamesg
I think there's a whole vein of things to explore in the realm of "collaboration" in the context of the IndieWeb.
#
capjamesg
We had ~6 people collaboratively coding in the same HTML document at a HWC this year which was fun 😄
#
[tantek]
Sorry to hear it wasn't fun. Feels like maybe it's worth looking at it from a history studies perspective IMO
#
[tantek]
e.g. if someone wrote a paper on "blurry painting" as a thing and then someone else said wait wasn't that a thing in the past? And someone else pointed out Impressionism. Does that make the original paper less fun?
#
capjamesg
I appreciate that metaphor 😄
#
[Al_Abut]
high five to you guys for working it out. the most common anti-pattern for collaboration is trying to do it all over text, imo
#
[Al_Abut]
so easy to misread candor as a tone mismatch
#
capjamesg
I think it's worth documenting that co-blogging paper on the wiki. I don't think we should rename the page to "co-blogging" though; it feels a tad distant (like co-coding or co-baking, I'd rather say pair coding or baking together)?
#
capjamesg
Yeah I think it's _really_ important from a community perspective for contributions to be first welcomed, then given feedback on (unless, of course, the contribution is spam / not in good faith).
#
tantek.com
reacted with ❤️ to <capjamesg[d]> I appreciate that metaphor 😄
#
capjamesg
In any case I'm glad to know that there is a longer history of this, which we should certainly document!

I looked at my old group blogs from the 2002 era and they assumed multiple authors by default, and didn't bother to name the idea. Blogger was intrinsically collborative
#
[KevinMarks]
I think MT and then WP went more solo
#
capjamesg
How was blogger intrinsically collaborative? That sounds interesting!
#
[KevinMarks]
partly this was because you could have conversations within one blog without having to deal with comment systems
#
[KevinMarks]
It still is - you can add more authors easily - the admin gets to invite people by email
#
[KevinMarks]
if they have a blogger account they are in.
#
[KevinMarks]
so for example https://gonzoengaged.blogspot.com/ added authors over time

Co-author posts is a bit different - the early blogger model was one author per post but multi author blogs
#
[KevinMarks]
But Co-author was a normal academic thing for papers, so once academics got involved they wanted it per post too.
#
capjamesg
Ghost allows more than one author on a post.
#
capjamesg
The field for setting an author is called "Authors"
#

Related to all this is the concept of joint-authorship, too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_authorship
