What on earth happened to the main page on the indieweb wiki? a user named akirus.fun deleted the entire main page. should it be reverted?

akirus.fun doesn't even load, is this a mallicious decision?

OK, just noticed that every user has permission to delete every page. this looks like an oversight. after the main page is brought back maybe this should be changed?

I’ll see if I can revert this.

Never mind, I got the content from the commit before it was deleted (https://github.com/indieweb/wiki/blob/122344a8d4773ae8c5191086bf0b770f6c43dba6/data/M/Main%20Page.txt) and recovered the page 🙌

[capjamesg]: it looked like a mistake to me to be honest
#
WinnerWind
they deleted their talk page almost a minute later. the home page deletion could be a mistake?
#
WinnerWind
but yes we should definitely lock the home page and other important pages with a wikipedia style user restriction system
#
WinnerWind
doesnt have to be as deep or detailed but as long as no one can delete the home page again lol
#
WinnerWind
oh no! did you copy paste the home page's content back? that resets the history on MediaWiki >_<
#
WinnerWind
shouldnt be that big of a deal though ^_^ glad it could be brought back
brentl joined the channel
#
WinnerWind
[capjamesg]: you need sysop permission on MediaWiki to revert pages or to view deleted pages' content, very weird rule indeed. deletion/moving is by default allowed for all users
#
WinnerWind
definitely an incident to set up user permissions for (sorry for repeating it so many times but this should be done asap imo)
#
[capjamesg]
I did copy the home page’s content back 😬 I figured that was better than having the home page blank with the person’s domain name (albeit their MediaWiki user profile, but still showing their domain) showing in the message that said the page was deleted.
#
WinnerWind
i guess that's true ^_^` oh well, it happens i guess. maybe later on a wiki admin could do some tricks to get the history back (not sure how well that'd go)
#
[capjamesg]
We have the full history backed up in GitHub, which is clunky, but we do have the data.

Looks like we need more wiki admins in the UK/EU timezone. Who do we have now? [KevinMarks] do you have undelete privileges on the wiki?
#
[tantek]
Or we move deletion to be admin only. Thoughts?

[KevinMarks] 1. go to your User: page (you can do this by clicking on your name/domain at the top right of any IndieWeb wiki page), 2. Click the link "View user groups"

it says autoconfirmed users

Also, I was just going to look up the person’s site again and they had a blog and they had sent me an email before.
#
[capjamesg]
It might lend credence to WinnerWind’s idea that it was a mistake, but I’m not sure how easy it is to confuse deleting a user page with the home page of the site.
#
[capjamesg]
Nevertheless, I’m glad things are all back up!

[capjamesg]: it's pretty easy, ive done this mistake on MediaWiki a few times before which is why i stopped using MediaWiki for personal wiki sites
#
WinnerWind
the deletion form is kind of confusing
#
WinnerWind
everything about MediaWiki is kind of confusing to be honest ^_^`
#
WinnerWind
i think the wikipedia style of deletion is good. deletion is a process that people can vote on and then things get deleted only if enough people vote AND an admin steps in to delete it
#
WinnerWind
if im not mistaken, isnt everyone autoconfirmed after 30 days?
#
WinnerWind
same with moving
#
WinnerWind
[tantek]: probably they decided to quit the indieweb but was still logged in, but before doing so they thought they might delete their user page, which makes sense tbh
#
WinnerWind
either that or weak indieauth

slightly offtopic but their site was really cool before it went down. i actually remember seeing it in the wild once
