[capjamesg][tantek] I think there is enough common ground to have one page. It would be nice if /demos listed IWC demos and also guidance on how to do a good demo both at IWC and HWC.
LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "irc spam" yet. Would you like to create it?_ (Or just say "irc spam is ____", a sentence describing the term)
Loqidiscuss infrastructure is documentation of various internal plumbing which runs the IndieWeb discussion chat rooms, chat logs, bots, dealing with spam, and experiments related to that plumbing https://indieweb.org/chat_spam
morganwebdevSuffice to say, it gives me a lot of feelings of power relatively and control, such as being able to export a large bulk of several instagram pages Ive helped manage, but hey who knows if it will completely enshittify beyond the pale any day now. Good to have~
[Mike]I would like to see either a reference to the mentioned conversation among developers, or a list of most popularly-proposed alternatives for people who want to move away.
[tantek][capjamesg] that reminds me I need to document their overly drastic identity (passport) requirements. To me that's sufficient to disqualify Hetzner as "good". We should not be normalizing mere web hosting to require "show me your papers" behaviors
[Mike]I have heard strongly mixed things about Hetzner. The price is right, and a lot of people sure do like them, but I've also heard a few too many people complain about having their accounts mysteriously closed.
[capjamesg]“In some cases, especially if there are doubts about the accuracy of the data you provided or if the risk check shows unusual results, we may ask you to submit a valid ID document (e.g. national ID card or passport).”
[capjamesg]I’m not sure how they are doing the “prediction about how likely it is that you will meet your contractual payment obligations and use our services responsibly” though.
[Mike]I dunno. After this summers AI-agents-breaking-sandbox-and-ganging-up-on-the-rest-of-the-internet-capades, I'm seriously not crazy about invasive demands for very sensitive documents. Pretty much phone number or worse, I'm not comfortable with providing.
[capjamesg]Yeah. I just wanted to note that Hetzner does document the what, why, how, legal bases, data partner, and appeals process around ID verification.
[tantek]In practice I think this means they are not hungry/competitive enough for "new customers" — they believe they can place higher requirements/friction on new customers than anyone here should tolerate IMO. So better to not give them any new customer business, no matter how reliable they have been to existing customers.
[Mike]I reluctantly agree. Practical problem is, it's getting harder and harder to find service providers who don't have *some* unacceptable term or behavior. Were this another forum this would be the first line of a rant about economics; but I will restrain myself here.
[tantek]There are smaller providers (who are "hungrier" for new customers) in Europe that are worth exploring, pretty sure we have chatted about them informally / otr in the past
gRegor[Mike] re: discussions, mostly anecdotes I've seen on Bluesky, not necessarily a lot of specifics on alternatives (though I'm also not digging deep since I'm not on DigitalOcean). I found out about this via our own Jacky and a post in the stream channel reminded me of it so figured I'd add it. Expansion/updates welcome!
