What is a sidenote?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "sidenote" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "sidenote is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[capjamesg]
A sidenote is a note that is left in the margin of a web page and is visually connected to the text to which it relates.

[capjamesg] /sidenote looks like a good new page! I noticed it didn't link to /marginalia — were you aware of that previous page? And do you think we should have both pages or have one be a section of the other? (I have not formed an opinion, asking the question from a neutral perspective)
#
[capjamesg]
I did see marginalia! The implementations of sidenotes I have seen are more plaintext / maybe with a link, rather than being rich in functionality (e.g. comment threads).
#
[capjamesg]
I think sidenotes may be a subset of marginalia, but one that is sufficiently well explored both technically and from a design perspective that it is worth its own page.
#
[capjamesg]
Enough so that I could think of two community members with sidenotes off the top of my head, and even more websites.
#
[tantek]
Makes sense. Perhaps worth some very clear / upfront cross-linking between the two?
#
[capjamesg]

Just generated this week's newsletter! You still have a few minutes to make changes, and I'll re-generate it 10 minutes before it gets sent out at 3pm Pacific time. https://indieweb.org/this-week/2026-10-16.html

^ seems like there's a bit too much "Summary" bloat in the IWC BLR events. Like all the "Agenda: ..." details belong in Description, not Summary
#
[tantek]
I can't help but wonder if this is a UI bug rather than user error
#
[tantek]
as in the user thinks they're doing the right thing, pasting into giant text field, when they should only be putting a line or two of text, and then putting the rest in description
#
[tantek]
like a Meetable UI bug that is
#
[tantek]
anyway it's a bit late now to fix (unless people are here and ready to take a look and quickly discuss / agree on some edits) but we should (1) figure out the right thing (guidelines?), (2) explicitly note that such events may be community edited to conform accordingly
#
aaronpk
hm yeah
#
aaronpk
i could definitely add more guidance, but they clearly pasted in more HTML than fits in the box https://media.aaronpk.com/2026/10/16144254-1424.png
#
aaronpk
i'm just moving the whole thing to the description since the start of it is "Agenda"
#
[tantek]
they did, however I still think that's the consequence of the Summary box being 5.5 lines tall
#
[tantek]
yeah it's on every one of the IWC BLR events
#
[tantek]
go for it
#
[tantek]
My Meetable suggested fix would be 2 line max height on Summary box, perhaps with a character count (non-blocking) that suggests it be kept to 300 chars or less? or pick another suitable "summary" maxlen number
#
[tantek]
📎 🙂 you're pasting a big block of HTML into the Summary which is intended for a short text summary with minimal styling, shall I move your block of HTML to the Description?
#
[tantek]
^ that emoji pairing should display a smiling Clippy
#
aaronpk
yeah, maybe even blocking <p> tags in the summary? or all html?

nice, yeah limiting p or heading tags sounds smart

👍 and to be clear it doesn't actually stop you from submitting, just displays this warning

aside, on the diff page https://events.indieweb.org/event/1175/history when I click the " IndieWebClub BLR" next to the arrow icon, get a 404: https://events.indieweb.org/2026/11/indiewebclub-blr-

oh, it's because it's a template event
