BioticZombie
So you guys just sit here silent or do you just have a client logged on?
#
PsyWren
BioticZombie: I think most of us just have a client logged in.
#
PsyWren
At least I do -- running on a VPS all the time.

hello is it right to do something like <abbr class="geo" title="93.342, 23.233">Name of the Place</abbr> ?
#
g0
Or should the content have to be some representation of the latitude longitude values?
#
tantek
the content should have some more human friendly representation of the lat long
#
tantek
e.g. using degrees minutes seconds
#
g0
Oh, the point is I don't want to show the latitude and longitude in any form
#
g0
except maybe in the title
#
g0
I guess i'll have to hide it?
#
singpolyma
g0: you *could* hide with CSS. or maybe use value-title
#
singpolyma
the point is that if the content is not a representation of the geo info then it's a sort of abuse of abbr

singpolyma: That was helpful, Thanks

#
tantek
g0 then you're not really publishing geo information
#
tantek
if you don't want to show the lat & long
#
tantek
if you just want to publish an address, use the adr microformat
#
g0
I don't want to publish the entire address
#
tantek
you can publish whichever address components you want
#
g0
I'm trying to keep it compact.
#
tantek
do you have an example of the human visible content you're trying to keep compact?
#
g0
I don't think there is any component that fits my purpose, the names of the places are like "Bono's Pizza Place" etc.
#
g0
But I have the coordinates to them
#
g0
Also, I want to be able to attach geo data to img tags, is that possible?
#
g0
without showing text i.e
#
singpolyma
g0: for marking up an org and its location you probably want hCard
#
singpolyma
images have no real way to add metadata do them
#
g0
right.
#
tantek
go - invisible metadata is generally frowned upon because it quickly gets out-of-sync becomes inaccurate
#
g0
out-of-sync? as in?

#
tantek
you change the visible data (e.g. the image), but forget to update the invisible data (e.g. lat long) because upon reloading in your browser etc. you don't see anything wrong.
#
tantek
this happens all the time
#
tantek
with meta keywords etc.
#
g0
Oh, makes sense
#
tantek
in general invisible metadata is a waste of time
#
tantek
at best
#
tantek
at worst it's data pollution
#
tantek
noise
#
g0
Oh...
#
g0
I'm working on StatusNet
#
g0
they do it all over actually
#
tantek
cool!
#
tantek
(working on StatusNet)
#
tantek
yeah - invisible metadata is a common anti-pattern unfortunately
#
tantek
there seems to be a lot of developer faith in things lasting - when they don't
#
g0
my GSoC work is to implement federated gowalla like features on it.
#
g0
So I was looking at how to markup tiny avatars
#
tantek
those are typically hCards
