tantek in answer to the first question, yes, Google supports some set of microformats for rendering rich snippets, and for those types of data (people, events, recipes, reviews etc.), microformats are enough

tantek "rich snippets" is a presentational term, and refers to "richer" (more information, sometimes with graphics) "snippets" (bits of summary text in search result items)

tantek I don't know of any rich snippets supported by Google which are not included in microformats markup yet - though there are some rich snippets (e.g. search for "MLB") which don't appear to come from any kind of semantic markup at all (having viewed the source of mlb.com and tried to figure it out)

tantek ChiefRA - it sounds like it - it's probably a case by case question for the types of data you're trying to markup.

tantek Google started showing rich snippets in the first place because there were so many pages marked up with specific microformats.

tantek So if there is a new type of data you want to markup for which there are no microformats, help develop a microformat for it, (per the microformats process), and if enough other sites adopt it, then Google and others may show it too.
