Yay, you folks still exist, thought everyone had disappeared or something, since the latest activity was last in 2009
#
Takyoji
or has Microdata (W3C specification) or RDFa kind of superseded the effort?
#
tantek
hey Takyoji - on the contrary - activity continues on a daily basis!
#
Takyoji
Oh yay
#
tantek
most of the work in microformats happens on the wiki
#
Takyoji
Anyone here been active in the hCard standard?
#
tantek
hCard is quite stable
#
Takyoji
because I have a use case that conflicts with the specification
#
tantek
it's got some minor tweaks coming in microformats 2.0 - http://microformats.org/wiki/microformats-2
#
tantek
and there's been a bunch of brainstorming to add features / use-cases as well: http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard-brainstorming
#
tantek
including how to use hCard + WebID - the W3C's Web Identity effort
#
tantek
Takyoji - what's the use case you've found?
#
Takyoji
Because what I need is: I have a 'contact us' page for my little company, however the hCard specification requires a first name and last name, whereas the contact information would really be of a company and not a specific person
#
tantek
hCard doesn't require first/last name
#
tantek
just an fn (formatted name)
#
Takyoji
Also, it feels a bit unclear about adding instant messaging screennames
#
Takyoji
ahh, formatted name, alright
#
Takyoji
So as of instant messaging, it only specifies links, correct?
#
tantek
hCard is likely to be updated to use the "impp" property
#
Takyoji
ahh alright, so the href property is only relevant, I thought the element content was also important
#
tantek
the nice thing about using those links for the instant messaging properties is that they are also clickable for use by the user
#
Takyoji
Yes
#
Takyoji
The only thing I find a bit awkward with it is that it's specified as just another link for a profile, rather than explicitly stating it's an instant messaging contact.
#
Takyoji
Especially if you're scanning links on a profile and you get something that's not HTTP/HTTPS for the URI scheme
#
Takyoji
as of IMPP, do you have acknowledgement of "Instant Messaging and Presence Protocol (IMPP) was a protocol for instant messaging proposed by the IETF via RFC 2778 and RFC 2779. There has been no progress since it has been obsoleted by XMPP." or is there recent information that conflicts with the statement?
#
Takyoji
Lastly (although I haven't looked completely through the specification), is there any component of hCard for public keys at all?
#
Takyoji
or even, a link to a public key
#
Takyoji
for PGP
#
tantek
yes - the KEY property
#
tantek
IMPP as a protocol and "impp" as a property for vCard/hCard are two different things.
#
tantek
hope that helps!
#
Takyoji
that part I noticed, I'm curious of WebID, as I don't think I've encountered it yet, I have heard of BrowserID, but I assume they are completely different
#
tantek
they are quite different yes
#
Takyoji
and I shall return within about an hour for any further thoughts.
#
tantek
I think it is good we are exploring different ideas for what might work for distributed identity.
#
tantek
I may be off to bed but hopefully back tomorrow!
#
tantek
good chatting with you and I hope you find those pages useful

@emilylewis
*Preliminary* data from Web Data Commons project shows #microformats comprise 96% of the structured data on the web http://t.co/07ttGJys
#
tantek
so if anything, microformats have achieved even more penetration than alternatives since previous comparisons that showed about ~90% or so.
#
Takyoji
Woo, yay for strong stats
#
Takyoji
but ultimately, all of them can be used together on a single page, last I recall
#
Takyoji
I just really hate the name for the element properties in the Microdata format
#
Takyoji
itemprop, itemscope (and especially this attribute having a null value), etc
#
Takyoji
Also, has there been initiatives within this circle of going out and providing some tweaks for existing FOSS to present data in a Microformat structure?

hey, I was wondering if anybody knows if it is valid to attach reviews to a person (not a product)?
#
jakemac53
I noticed on this page http://schema.org/Product it lists reviews as a property, but on this page http://schema.org/Person it doesn't
#
jakemac53
but the reviews I am trying to list are related to individual doctors within a single practice
#
jakemac53
(so I can't really use the organization http://schema.org/Organization either since they aren't reviews for the organization as a whole
#
jakemac53
I guess I could just mark up the person as a generic thing? But I would rather mark it up as a person specifically if possible.
