Quick question. I'm just starting with microformats/schema and I noticed that you start off a section with something like <div itemprop="address"> Now my address is inside a <li> so I get a blank line in the list because of the div. I can paste the code if that helps
chiui joined the channel
#
tantek
hey stevieman - blank lines and such depend typically on the text content and CSS, though sometimes an errant <br> can cause such problems
#
tantek
what's your markup?
#
stevieman
second let me pastebin it
#
stevieman
It's the div in the second <li>
#
stevieman
tantek, the funky a hrefs are djanog btw
#
stevieman
django
#
tantek
ah - you can't put a div directly inside a ul
#
tantek
that's part of the problem
#
tantek
want me to try a revision that fixes it and shows how to use hCard and the itemprop stuff simultaneously?
#
tantek
stevieman, also it was missing a close div inside
#
stevieman
tantek, noooo, really?
#
stevieman
tantek, nope the close div is there "<span itemprop="addressRegion">CA</span></div>"
#
stevieman
The CSS is kind of messed. I inherited the site
#
tantek
oops just found the close div inside but too soon
#
tantek
here this should do it: http://pastebin.com/qhvUzf1W
#
stevieman
tantek, I think it's this <div class="adr" itemprop="address" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/PostalAddress"> that is causing the problem
#
tantek
or the &nbsp
#
tantek
before it
#
tantek
do you need the &nbsp
#
tantek
? if not, just remove it
#
tantek
the nbsp causes something to be put on the line, which then the div has to break and start a new line after
#
stevieman
It's just adding space. If I remove the div everything in the second <li> lines up properly and is rendered on one line. With the div there the extra line gets inserted and the line breaks just after CA
#
stevieman
tantek, removing the &nbsp
#
stevieman
fixed the empty line issue
#
tantek
sweet - there you go - now with hCard too so your local business info will work with even more tools
#
stevieman
tantek, however I now have the short line problem. It's like the div isn't set to width:100%
#
tantek
it'll be whatever width its parent is by default
#
tantek
have you considered adding a "Download contact info" link?
#
stevieman
the paretn div is 100%
#
tantek
so that means 100% of its parent etc.
#
tantek
(not counting margins, border, padding)
#
stevieman
tantek, yah, I set the parent to 700px which more than enough room for the full line of text
#
tantek
there might be another rule that sets the width of ul or li maybe?
#
stevieman
tantek, I have a rule specifically for the li. I've tried 100%, 700 px no change. I pull that div out and it works
#
stevieman
tantek, I pasted your last pastebin and it worked. I have to see what you did differently
#
tantek
great!
#
stevieman
tantek, you included the postalcode and phone # inside the address itemscope you also put the Localbusiness itemscope inside the UL istead of in it's own div
#
tantek
right, the postal-code needs to be inside the adr/address as its a part of it
#
tantek
the tel will work in either place in hCard
#
tantek
although to be hierarchically precise, it could be moved outside the adr div
#
stevieman
ah the reason I had it outside was the example here http://schema.org/LocalBusiness shows it outside the div
#
stevieman
example 2 to be specific
#
tantek
the tel?
#
stevieman
doh
#
tantek
sure, here's a version with the tel outside the adr div: http://pastebin.com/yjvAT4XV
#
tantek
I took out the trailing comma after the postal code because it would look odd at the end of the line, because putting the close div there puts the tel on its own line
#
stevieman
It's like learning CSS all over again :)
#
stevieman
tantek, Thanks, So after all that I check the code and I get: Warning: This information will not appear as a rich snippet in search results results, because it seems to describe an organization. Google does not currently display organization information in rich snippets
#
tantek
yeah - it's hard to tell what microformats (nevermind schema) Google will support when
#
tantek
we've tried to keep a good list here: http://microformats.org/wiki/google-search
#
stevieman
tantek, I guess that doesn't mean they are not using the data, just not showing that data type in the SERPs
#
tantek
yeah, plus it's a good reason for using microformats first, since they're more widely supported in other tools than schema
#
tantek
e.g. Firefox Operator makes for a good user (and debugging) tool http://microformats.org/wiki/Operator
#
tantek
and H2VX.com allows you to create links directly on your site for users to download the contact info to their address books
#
tantek
both of which support / use the hCard in the markup in the pastebin I linked above
#
tantek
and Google also supports hCard

tantek
btw this is very cool: Calagator imports hCalendar events: http://calagator.org/sources/new
#
tantek
so if you want to post an event on Calagator, you can just blog the event yourself with hCalendar and then give Calagator the link to your blog post
