greetings - I was introduced to the microformats site recently and am not sure I'm being pointed in the right direction.
#
tobyink
whether it's the right direction depends on what you were looking for.
#
astebr
I am seeking CSS that can be used for various citation styles (ex: APA 6th) in HTML documents.
#
astebr
I've worked through a complex chain of LaTeX, BibTex and other libraries to generate a PDF of references, but this is quite a bit of overhead for data I already have stored in a database, and would be marking up with PHP.
#
tobyink
I don't think CSS is really enough to do that. CSS alone cannot re-order inline elements - e.g. author before title versus title before author.
#
astebr
Most of the articles referenced are from journals, and one particularly (PUBMED). There are a few exceptions, though I could handle that with scripting before applying CSS
#
astebr
Still a little unclear on microformats and how someone thought this would be useful in my search.
#
tobyink
There is at least one draft microformat for bibliographic data, but I can't see what help it would be to you either.

why does google require ?rel=author in the query string? http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1408986
#
tobyink
seems bizarre.

I hope they at least respect rel="author" attributes too
#
tobyink
they might be using it to detect referers.
#
aaronpk
could also be it's easier to tell people to add ?rel=author than adding an attribute since not all CMSs support rel attributes
#
tantek
they do respect rel=author
#
tantek
the ?rel stuff is an odd way of working around some CMS limitations but still seems odd/risky
#
aaronpk
just added hcard stuff to my site, hopefully google picks it up and starts showing my face next to search results now!
#
aaronpk
no idea how long it will take before it starts showing up, but I passed the "rich snippets" testing tool http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets
#
tantek
that's a good step
#
tantek
I don't know what heuristic they use for showing authorship in results
#
tantek
darn I missed the questions from astebr

well if he comes back or sees the logs

I'll look at doing this "CSS that can be used for various citation styles" with the citation styles that I researched for web citations.
