iSRAELi - not sure how useful dublin core is - what are you trying to do?

firefox plugin Operator has a Add to Google Calendar action... but i don't get a calendar entry created... is it because the dtend value is only 1 hour later than the start?

#
MikeD_
nope, it was because the microformat expects the title attribute to contain the data
#
tantek
MikeD_ that depends on the element
#
tantek
or if you're using the value-title feature
#
tantek
what's the page with the problem?
#
MikeD_
oh, there's an option? i really don't like the UI impact of cramming a datetime into title
#
MikeD_
it's not published yet

#
MikeD_
i could copy it out though
#
tantek
yes - there are a bunch of options
#
tantek
depending on what kind of markup you're already using
#
tantek
the value-title pattern is described here:
#
tantek
ah - you're already using the <time> element - good
#
tantek
I think then that might be an outstanding enhancement request with Operator
#
tantek
to get it to recognize the <time> element
#
MikeD_
that's what I used to test the integration to google :)
#
MikeD_
i didn't get much feedback on the semantic #html channel, care to comment on the way I used two time tags to show the start/end behavior of the event?
#
tantek
hmm - for some reason I left the #html channel years ago - is there much (interesting?) discussion there any more?
#
MikeD_
since html5 there have been a few interesting academic conversations
#
MikeD_
mostly "what's the difference between section and div" for example
#
tantek
oh - yeah, that problem ;)
#
MikeD_
what's an "article" :)
#
tantek
using two time elements is good
#
tantek
I would include the 1:00 PM inside the *first* time element, since it's part of that data
#
tantek
and then *not* include the " - " between the times
#
tantek
in the second time element
#
MikeD_
what style hook do i use to force the 1:00 onto the 'line' following the date?
#
tantek
I think that would require another element
#
tantek
I'm guessing your goal is to put the date in its own block, so I'd wrap a span just around the date and style it to display block
#
MikeD_
yup, that's where i was going (thanks for the validation)
#
tantek
alternatively you could put a <br/> after the date
#
MikeD_
when you said not include the "-" between the times, you mean not inside the time tag? or not at all
#
MikeD_
use something clever like time + time:before { content: "-"
#
MikeD_
}
#
tantek
not inside the time tag
#
tantek
heh - I wouldn't use CSS for it because it is still plain text content you want readers to see regardless of styling
#
MikeD_
yeah, so just between the begin and end time tags

if this snippet of markup is reused elsewhere (copy/paste) but the end-time isn't meant to be displayed the dash looks weird and should also be not displayed - so do you wrap it in an element that is styleable? or do i have to keep track of removing the content... in which case I might have no end time on the hCalendar ?
#
MikeD_
or vevent... or whatever part of the spec I'm trying to talk about
#
tantek
edited /value-class-pattern (+96) "/* limited use of value-title */ note todo"
(view diff)
#
tantek
right
#
tantek
hmm - that's an interesting argument for including the dash inside the dtend element
#
tantek
yes you're talking about hCalendar :)
#
tantek
btw note that there's now a microformats2 version of hCalendar also for generic parsers - feel fee to use both for better forward compat: http://microformats.org/wiki/microformats2#h-event
#
tantek
and yes - the naming question/dilemma you point out has been fixed in microformats2
#
tantek
all microformats2 vocabularies are named the same thing as their root elements
#
tantek
e.g. h-event
#
MikeD_
so p-name supercedes "summary" ? is that suggested because summary doesn't meaningfully convey the "name" content? I was confused by that, I assumed summary was what description actually is
#
MikeD_
so if I made the vevent class also include h-event and summary include p-name, that would cover both parser implementations? (conceivably)
#
tantek
and the dt properties became dt- properties
#
tantek
e.g. dt-end and dt-start
#
tantek
also p-description
#
tantek
p-name is a unification of various name-like properties including "fn" from hCard and "summary" from hCalendar
#
tantek
also, no matter how many times we explained it, "fn" confused people, especially new people. it's just a name right? right.
#
MikeD_
cool
#
MikeD_
fwiw: also cool is that I would see your name on the wiki page, then come into this channel and you're actually here to talk to about it.
#
MikeD_
is the dt-start parseable by css as a classname?

is there a directed graph lib with info boxes and css3/dhtml fallback ?
#
tantek
MikeD_ yes - you can have hyphens in classnames and have it work with CSS as well
#
tantek
and great to have you here as well!
#
MikeD_
that was 15 minutes of struggle to find a space between time and .dt-start in the stylesheet
#
MikeD_
operator converts dt-start to zulu before feeding it to google.. that's interesting
#
MikeD_
is that due to a google requirement or a feature of Operator ?
#
MikeD_
here's where I am at this point: http://jsfiddle.net/sCJ5q/
#
MikeD_
apparently that didn't update, try this: http://jsfiddle.net/m8fAz/
#
MikeD_
it's a bit unfortunate that there's an extra empty span just to keep the tooltip from popping up the datetime that's part of the time tag, but whatever
#
MikeD_
i think it's important that the content be machine readable
#
tantek
the extra empty span is a transitional thing - as more software supports HTML5, we'll have to depend on fewer empty spans
#
tantek
looks good. you can also add "u-url" into the class="url" for the h-event as well
#
MikeD_
oh yeah.. when i showed this to the other person i'm working with... (after many reminders about semantic class names) says, "class='url' ?!?"
#
MikeD_
should the h-event be first in the class attribute?
#
MikeD_
or does that fall under the category of rediculous microoptimization
KevinMarks joined the channel
#
tantek
MikeD_ re: should the h-event be first in the class attribute - I think it should because it makes it easier to recognize that it (and perhaps the subsequent vevent class name) are part of a microformat. Similarly with class="dt-start dtstart", and class="p-name summary"
#
tantek
mentioned a bit in the "Tips:" section here: http://microformats.org/wiki/2#backward_compatible
