tommorris tantek: regarding wikivoyage, the reason for the pseudo-XML is because way back in the dark midsts of time, MediaWiki thought that was the best way to extend the syntax. there is a discussion about getting rid of them, and a possibility we may have to get rid of them for forwards-compatibility.
