adactio: tantek left you a message 1 week ago: barnabywalters, gjones, tommorris I didn't have a chance to finish incorporating etherpad microformats2parsing notes, please take a look, try to add some to the wiki pages: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/microformats2parsing

hmm
#
Harzilein
hi
#
Harzilein
i wonder if there is some semantic thingy to discover "types" of parts of uris
#
barnabywalters
greetings Harzilein
#
barnabywalters
what specifically are you trying to do? can you give an example?
#
Harzilein
i.e. if i'm below some part http://subdomain.organization.org/section2/, i'd like to discover that siblings of the /section/ part of the path, by their position, are all of type "section"
#
barnabywalters
if other URLs at that level are listed, you could fetch+parse them and see if they contain microformats of the same type
#
barnabywalters
there are also some rel values for this sort of thing
#
Harzilein
i want to use this for tagging. currently i could tag tld::org, subdomain::subdomain, organization, section2, eventually i'd like to be able to tag it as tld::org, organization::organization, site::subdomain, section::section2
#
Harzilein
(those "faceted" tags are intended to resemble debtags btw)
#
barnabywalters
generally within a microformat, p-category is used to list tags or categories
#
barnabywalters
okay, so they’re key-value pairs wrapped up as tags
#
Harzilein
no, there could be multiple values for one facet
#
barnabywalters
so you can have key::value1, key::value2?
#
Harzilein
but in my case there would usually be one facet for each value derived from url parts
#
Harzilein
yes
#
Harzilein
currently i would just go with calling every first level subdirectory a section, but i'd really like to refine this
#
Harzilein
especially the ability of not having to hardcode their class as "section" would be valuable
#
barnabywalters
Harzilein: what is the data you’re publishing? what do you want people to be able to do with it?

#
Harzilein
barnabywalters: i don't want to publish those tags (thought the reference to a tagging microformat is interesting anyway), i just want some way to utilize existign semantic anything to have a lightweight way to turn the usual information about a bookmarked page (title, description, url) into faceted tags, so i don't have to spend as much time categorizing bookmarks. i understand some of the facets are rather artificial, but ...
#
Harzilein
... i'd prefer arbitrary tagging facets over just doing, say, word splitting on urls and suggesting those as tags
#
barnabywalters
so you want to automatically convert structured data into these faceted tags?
#
barnabywalters
these faceted tags look a lot like microformats properties
#
barnabywalters
so you could parse a page for microformats, then pick out some common properties (like 'name') and make tags out of those

Harzilein
no, basically i want to take a bunch of "parts" from a url, then use microformat/semantic-whatever discovery to augment them with facets. so first they are unstructured, and the user agent should attempt to make them usable in some menu hierarchy, say "by-tld -> ..." "by-site -> ..." (normalization for the sites might be left to the user to do, i'd end up with "normalized-site -> blog" or "normalized-site -> forums"
#
Harzilein
oh well, maybe i should write an article explaining this
#
Harzilein
the current practice i employ in my bookmarks is quite mechanical, and could use more facets, like the mentioned "section"

tommorris - I found a script called removeUnusedAccounts but it has database problems and bails
#
tantek
yet another reason databases suck for maintenance, even if you're an admin/su on the server, the database puts up additional barriers
