KevinMarks (and others), do we need to define classic microformats?
#
aaronpk
or "legacy" microformats?
#
tantek
well they still work / supported by Google so they're not quite legacy (yet)
#
tantek
that is, until we know for sure that Google supports *both* classic microformats and microformats2, better to keep advising using both as needed
#
tantek
I'm sending folks here http://microformats.org/wiki/microformats2 to get started on microformats2
#
aaronpk
i've noticed google is starting to parse more plain HTML
#
aaronpk
this is an interesting example, they found the <ul> and also found the <strong> sentence within each <li> https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+become+financially+independent
#
aaronpk
oh hey barnaby already referred to it as "classic microformats" in that article
#
tantek
that's a good sign that google is parsing more plain HTML
#
tantek
that means they are likely doing some statistical analysis
#
tantek
which mean as soon as microformats2 publishing / adoption crosses that threshold (whatever it is), they'll parse that too
#
tantek
(they may already be parsing it but not saying anything)

#
KevinMarks_
they have internal tools that do ptatern recognition within sites
#
KevinMarks_
effectively reverse engineering out the templates
#
KevinMarks_
so those could find mf2
#
KevinMarks_
maybe they apply across sites too
#
KevinMarks_
I bet knowing bootstraps idioms would get them a lot of structure

Classic Microformats implies mf2 is New Coke

KevinMarks: I don't think today's webdevs remember / know the reference
#
tantek
that whole thing was a way to transition to cornsyrup wasn't it?
#
KevinMarks_
it's the canonical marketing case study that everyone refers to
#
KevinMarks_
they did blind user AB testing and found people preferred the sweeter version
#
KevinMarks_
but in fact they were attached to the nostalgia of the flavour in isolation
#
tantek
KevinMarks: I don't think webdevs read marketing case studies ;)
#
KevinMarks_
hm, I hadn't thought about ti, but feedparser has a very thorough hcard to vcard implementation with tests in
#
KevinMarks_
I should strip that out
#
tantek
into something separable?
#
tantek
like a Python h(-)card to vcard converter?

#
KevinMarks_
because having one in a feed parser is quixotic at best
#
KevinMarks_
but Mark made great tests
#
tantek
makes sense
#
tantek
a separate library would be very cool
