tantek @benward aaronpk et al: who controls the dns for microformats.org ?
tantek joined the channel
#
tantek
shaners, the micrognomes :)
#
tantek
checks logs
#
[shaners]
can you pass a message to them please?
#
Loqi
[veganstraightedge] #3 Wire up DNS (ruby.microformats.org ?)
#
tantek
shaners, any reason why microformats.org/wiki/ruby won't do for now?
#
tantek
could also setup top level /ruby if there's a good reason for it (as compared to other languages or other top level stuff)
#
tantek
ah, will add to issue
#
tantek
apologies for redirecting
#
[shaners]
https://microformats-ruby-parser.herokuapp.com is a standalone rails app. Deploying that to a wiki page seems unlikely.
#
[shaners]
I am proposing that each of the language parser websites live at a subdomain:
#
[shaners]
php.mf.org node.mf.org etc
#
tantek
I'd rather see subdomains for separate user-facing apps if we really want to bother with maintaining subdomains
#
tantek
the higher level problem is that we are already stretched beyond what we can maintain, so I'd be against more microformats server admin stuff
#
[shaners]
I built the ruby parser site yesterday in a few hours. But I don’t want to host it on my personal domain, nor at a branded heroku subdomain.
#
[shaners]
I’m down to maintain the app and run it on heroku. But i’d rather the url be in mf.org name space.
#
[kevinmarks]
twitter has microformats, but only on intent pages
#
[kevinmarks]
and in the embedded iframes
#
[shaners]
(I also think it’s better self-documentation than on misc personal sites)
#
[shaners]
lang name subdomains, that is
#
tantek
Twitter used to have microformats (classic) on profiles and permalinks
#
Loqi
shaners has 7 karma in this channel (67 overall)
#
tantek
btw this needs some serious updating microformats.org/wiki/microformats2#Ruby to at a minimum link to the updated repo, and that test site (with perhaps an invitation for someone to put a domain for it!)
#
tantek
ooh "We're sorry, but something went wrong. / If you are the application owner check the logs for more information." (just tried tantek.com)
#
[shaners]
I’m pushing the fix as we speak. ben_thatmustbeme released 4.0.1 earlier today.
#
[shaners]
try again
#
[shaners]
I’ll leave updating the wiki as an exercise for ben_thatmustbeme et al.
#
[shaners]
As for the “invitation for someone to put a domain for it”… what does that mean?
davidmead joined the channel
#
ben_thatmustbeme
He means to request others to put up a domain for it
#
[shaners]
but why bother with another domain when we already have mf.org?
#
tantek
distributing the admin load
#
tantek
when we're already over capacity on microformats.org
#
[shaners]
If I was give access to the DNS, I could do it
gRegorLove joined the channel
#
tantek
shaners, it's not a matter of initial work, we're over capacity on admin load because of ongoing maintenance, which is nearly always discounted / ignored in these kinds of discussions
#
tantek
having someone else do it on another domain delegates the maintenance, which is far more important (costly over time) than any initial setup
#
[shaners]
putting it on another domain just pushes the maintenance to some where/one else.
#
[shaners]
IMO, at the expense of, user/reader ux.
#
[shaners]
How does someone (not me necessarily, just asking) become part of the “we” that helps take on the burden of ongoing maintenance for mf.org?
#
tantek
like any other community, starts showing up and doing other productive reliable work
#
tantek
hey that's an faq
#
[shaners]
What if someone doesn’t want to do other work? They just want to do dns admin?
#
tantek
because we've had trolls (not you obv) in the past try to claim they should be admins
#
tantek
it's about community trust
#
tantek
have never seen that work out well, volunteer admins for a community that they don't actually have any other (personal or otherwise) stake in
#
[shaners]
sure. that’s fair.
#
[shaners]
(Sincerely. I see how that can read as snark. It’s not.)
#
tantek
I took it sincerely :)
#
tantek
hah - literally the only FAQ about admins ? http://microformats.org/wiki/admin-faq
#
Loqi
admin FAQ
#
tantek
shaners, that being said, if you have suggestions for improving the politeness, tone, encouragment etc. of that faq - totally open to it
#
[shaners]
So, we’re at an impasse. You don’t want to do it as a subdomain. I don’t want to host it somewhere else. You think the ongoing maintenance down the road will be more than it’s worth. I think it’s a one and done cname. Maaaybe updated in years.
#
[shaners]
It’s not like installing or maintaining wikimedia or wordpress.
#
[shaners]
CNAME ruby ruby.microformats.org.herokudns.com.
#
tantek
!tell ben_thatmustbeme want to take a crack at updating http://microformats.org/wiki/microformats2#Ruby ?
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
Loqi
microformats2
#
tantek
shaners, would a redirect from microformats.org/ruby-parser to https://microformats-ruby-parser.herokuapp.com/ be an ok or at least acceptable interim compromise?
#
[shaners]
Would a personal domain redirect to a *.wp.com or *.tumblr.com be acceptable?
#
[shaners]
It’s certainly not preferable. But ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#
ben_thatmustbeme
I think it's okay that it not be on the subdomain.
#
Loqi
ben_thatmustbeme: tantek left you a message 13 minutes ago: want to take a crack at updating http://microformats.org/wiki/microformats2#Ruby ?
#
ben_thatmustbeme
I actually think it's better on a different domain
#
[shaners]
ben_thatmustbeme do you want to take that on?
#
ben_thatmustbeme
If I had a system set up for ruining Ruby, sure
#
[shaners]
I’m already running the app in Heroku land. That’s not the problem.
#
ben_thatmustbeme
So it's literally just a domain name
#
[shaners]
I just don’t want to have another domain on my docket.
#
[shaners]
(And I’d prefer that the community doesn’t have to learn and remember yet another domain, but that ship seems to have sailed.)
#
ben_thatmustbeme
I'll take a look tomorrow
#
ben_thatmustbeme
Same hours for the wiki page tantek
#
tantek
hours?
#
ben_thatmustbeme
Stupid phone
#
ben_thatmustbeme
Think it's good to list in the stable section?
#
[shaners]
I think so
#
[shaners]
It’s spec compliant and with good test coverage
#
tantek
go for it
#
tantek
FWIW the Python parser has a live version on a heroku URL also
#
[shaners]
i know. i think that’s poor form. for the same reasons that we discourage that for personal domains.
#
tantek
seems ok for just "tools" that aren't actually hosting any content
#
[shaners]
this and pin13 both have permalinks. to me that counts as content.
#
tantek
oh of the parsed content? that's a good point
#
[shaners]
for parsed urls and parsed html snippets

#
aaronpk
Hosting content with permalinks is a great reason not to use *.microformats.org actually
#
aaronpk
i would want to make sure the permalinks expired very quickly if they were on microformats.org
#
tantek
indeed
#
gRegorLove
gets back to updating /h-card-examples
#
gRegorLove
Should it still mention XFN examples like /hcard-examples ? Are there XFN consumers?
#
tantek
certainly consumers of rel=me :)
#
gRegorLove
Really? ;)
#
aaronpk
I think it's perfectly fine to have the different language parsers spread across a bunch of different domains. It's not like Microformats is a corporation that is developing client libraries that need to look branded and consistent. Having it on multiple domains makes it look more widely adopted if anything!
#
gRegorLove
Examples on there are for others, "References to People in Blog Posts" "References to People in Blogrolls"
