what would the world be like if the time that has gone into blockchain had gone into e.g. microformats and redecentralised web?

hi all. i'm trying to edit the wiki, and my edit includes links, so it's giving me a captcha - "Your edit includes new external links. To help protect against automated spam, please type the two words you see in the box below:" - but the two words and box don't appear, so i can't save my edit. help?

(also logging into it over non-SSL http made me 😢, but i'll leave that for another time)
#
aaronpk
it's a whole thing
#
aaronpk
the only real fix right now is to make the edit without the link and ask someone with link privileges to add it
#
[snarfed]
wow, much wow
#
aaronpk
fixing the captcha means updating the plugin which requires a new version of mediawiki which requires a new version of php etc etc etc
#
[snarfed]
seems like the mf2 wiki overall has been...brittle, for...a long time now?
#
[snarfed]
ok well
#
aaronpk
which requires rewriting or ditching the theme because the theme is too old for new mediawiki
#
[snarfed]
:hugops: i guess
#
[jgmac1106]
mediawiki maintenance is so hard...often wonder if I should just start recommending people use dokuwiki or something...feel like I am setting them up for unsustainable admintax
#
aaronpk
it's not as bad if you do it continuously

it's only a disaster when you wait 5 years between updates. the same thing happened with the indieweb wiki.
#
[snarfed]
ok aaronpk i've suitably mangled the links in that ^ edit. mind fixing it?
#
aaronpk
let me see if i'm fancy enough
#
[jgmac1106]
I still want to keep building out the mdn docs on microformats anyways...though experimental properties don't really belong there
#
aaronpk
yeah MDN should have only stable stuff
#
aaronpk
i'm definitely in favor of improving the docs there tho!
#

edited /h-entry (-4) "link links"

worked
#
[tantek]
yeah there's different categories of levels of maintenance "needed", and MediaWiki is definitely in the GroupWare™ category of stuff that needs continuous maintenance, not for individuals unless you're a devops hobbyist
#
[tantek]
whereas I'd argue a goal for "typical" indieweb software should be minimal self-maintenance, stuff that "just works" for years without touching it
#
[tantek]
brittle is not quite right. more like reduced functionality
#
[jgmac1106]
yeah I think I will recommend dokuwiki for small nonteam projects not associated with a compsci program....never met a devops hobbyist...
#
[jgmac1106]
but this is really off topic sorry

#
[tantek]
lol [jgmac1106] plenty of devops hobbyists in the indieweb-dev channel
#
[tantek]
you've met plenty
#
[jgmac1106]
yeah I guess maintaining homer servers/sensors/bots should count...just never really thought about it in those terms
#
[jgmac1106]
devops to me just means the "red phone" folks you don't call till you really screwed something up
#
[tantek]
if you maintain your own WordPress install, you're a devops hobbyist
#
[tantek]
same with Known
#
GWG
[tantek]: there should be levels to that
#
[tantek]
same with every SSG
#
[tantek]
GWG, there are always levels to hobbyists/enthusiasts
#
[jgmac1106]
than I guess I am just DevOps interested....since maintaining would be a stretch.....
#
[tantek]
I mean not everyone is going to trick out their site with all the neon undercarriage
#
[jgmac1106]
gwg giving an answer only a devops hobbyist would give
#
GWG
This reminds me of when people would call me a nerd as a kid and I'd ask for a definition and they'd say, "You."
#
[jgmac1106]
now when people ask me for definition of nerd I say, "Your boss or the boss"
