aaronpk, it looks like in the migration we lost the custom themes we use for specifications on microformats.org
#
aaronpk
custom themes?
#
[tantek]
yes we had bars on the top left indicating whether they were Draft or Specification based on the [[Category:Draft Specifications]] or [[Category:Specifications]]
#
aaronpk
oh? i don't remember that
#
aaronpk
also how did that work?
#
[tantek]
in fact the microformats wiki theme seems to have been lost or disabled completely
#
[tantek]
via the categories
#
aaronpk
no i mean how did it actually work, like what was doing that
#
[tantek]
the wiki theme was doing it
#
aaronpk
a wiki plugin? random code somewhere? javascript?
#
[tantek]
serverside, no JS
#
[tantek]
hmm do we still have access to the old site
#
aaronpk
yea it's still up
#
[tantek]
did we put at a subdomain at least for reference?
#
[tantek]
hmm, old.microformats didn't seem to work
#
[tantek]
or rather just shows the new one πŸ™‚
#
[tantek]
pinging Rohit about it
#
aaronpk
aha i had it as mt.microformats.org
#
aaronpk
adding a cname for old.microformats.org now too
#
Zegnat
mt = MediaTemple?
#
aaronpk
ok digging in to the old theme, I see some code in here that grabs the list of categories, has an explicit list that it checks for (Category:Specifications, Category:Draft_Specifications, Category:Patterns), then adds classes to the body tag

#
aaronpk
it should be doable as an extension
#
[tantek]
right, then those classes depend on the styling in the microformats media wiki theme, which seems to be disabled
#
aaronpk
yes that was one of the first things we decided to do
#
aaronpk
like the indieweb wiki
#
[tantek]
I must have missed that
#
[tantek]
we've lost a lot of the "look" of the wiki pages that made them look like a part of the rest of the site which was very specifically designed to not just look like another wiki
#
[tantek]
type, layout, backgrounds etc.
#
[tantek]
I didn't see any note about "we decided to do" about that in the Etherpad, so I'm kinda curious who we decided if anyone actually involved with microformats since before IndieWeb was there to give input
#
aaronpk
I don't remember where it was captured now
#
aaronpk
but i thought that was decided ages ago as a prerequisite for even starting the migration
#
[tantek]
ditching the presentation of the wiki was definitely not "decided ages ago" nevermind as a prerequisite
#
[tantek]
the assumption was updating the presentation/theme would be another migration task
#
[tantek]
like everything else that was "working" in the old site
#
[tantek]
we did make that decision about the IndieWeb wiki update ages ago (2016?) but never the microformats wiki
#
aaronpk
well we can add it to the list, any volunteers?
#
[tantek]
I can help since it's PHP + CSS mostly right?
#
[tantek]
btw http://old.microformats.org/ now breaks with a 404
#
[tantek]
where as mt. still works somehow?

#
aaronpk
hm i thought the old server was set up to handle every subdomain
#
aaronpk
yeah it's all php and css, it'll require running a copy of mediawiki somewhere and installing the theme and figuring out what theme hooks changed between 1.13.2 and 1.34.1
#
[tantek]
running a copy of mediawiki somewhere is much more than php and css
#
[tantek]
not signing up for MySQL 😞
#
aaronpk
i mean you can code blind if you want but you're not gonna have much luck
#
[tantek]
I'm usually quite successful at coding blind as it were
#
[tantek]
compare these two for the difference in specification look in particular:

[Tantek Γ‡elik] h-entry is a simple, open format for episodic or datestamped content on the web. h-entry is often used with content intended to be syndicated, e.g. blog posts. h-entry is one of several open microformat standards suitable for embedding data in HTML. ...
#
aaronpk
mediawiki does have upgrade notes on each release
#
[tantek]
the microformats theme was much less invasive than the custom theme we had for indieweb
