gRegor: Can I prevail on you as an owner in the Microformats org to do something for me?

gRegor: Can you get me triage permission in https://github.com/microformats/h-entry ? It won't let me label

GWG, do we actually have labels that match the process though?
#
GWG
[tantek]: We have stable, proposed, and draft...which aaronpk put in. But I still don't have permission to set them. What labels are you suggesting?
#
GWG
[tantek]: You are also an owner, if you are so inclined.
#
[tantek]
so no those are frankly, not reflective of the existing process, nor actually helpful with moving things forward
#
[tantek]
GWG, I brainstormed a few labels here (quite buried unfortunately) directly tied to the change control process: https://indieweb.org/Falcon#one-off_tag-of_post
#
[tantek]
do you see the list starting with "Needs next steps" ?
#
GWG
Yes...I'd like to add ore labels for that. But this is a proposal for the parsing repo. I'm on the h-entry repo. Same?
#
GWG
Either way, I can't add more. I like some of those. I was starting with three labels. But I figured we might need more
#
[tantek]
no in this case, "starting with three labels" which are more abstract may actually make it *harder* to make progress on any particular issue
#
[tantek]
i.e. those are high level stages for a property, not issue stages
#
[tantek]
e.g. if you say "draft" as a label on a property proposal, you have no idea *which* of the requirements are remaining to be met to advance from "draft", which means, the label doesn't actually tell you *what* needs to be done to the issue to make progress
#
GWG
Okay. I like the labels you have there, but I would need permission to add them and remove the ones we aren't using.
#
[tantek]
yeah maybe step one is we actually come up with a reasoned list of labels that will actually help issues move forward
#
[tantek]
I'm going to delete the existing labels accordingly
#
GWG
Okay.
#
GWG
So, let's look at your list.

Looking just at h-entry...I have a few I'd definitely agree with and a few I have questions on

GWG, feel free, and I'll discuss later, I'm up too late right now (yay timezones) to continue this discussion later, so don't feel rushed to think out loud in chat
#
GWG
[tantek]: Timezones are a pain.
#
[tantek]
feel free to look at the list and consider them that is, and question in that way (agree / questions etc.)
#
[tantek]
just don't feel pressured to do it here in chat real time, because I won't be following up in real time
#
GWG
As long as we are moving forward, I'm not trying to rush anything. I just think we need to start doing some of these tasks in order to make a popup worth it.
#
[tantek]
totally agreed. I think I thought about that (how to move forward) a while ago, then decided I wanted to use adding those labels as use-case motivation to add "label" posts to my own site as responses to issues, and then that got lost amongst everything else I wanted to add to my site
#
[tantek]
as part of the "how do I use my own site instead of GitHub directly" to do issues, issue handling (labels / unlabeling) etc.
#
[tantek]
GWG, if you can think of a way to capture this kind of "how do we design good labels that help issues make progress" discussion, that would be appreciated. I don't know where to capture that
#
GWG
That was what I was wondering
#
[tantek]
and also how *not* to design issue labels (too abstract, unclear next steps)
#
GWG
Maybe an issue on the parsing repo to discuss it?
#
GWG
I'm not sure where else would work
#
[tantek]
I'd prefer not to do meta-issues on the repos like that
#
GWG
It's either there, or a new page on one of the wikis.
#
[tantek]
perhaps a wiki page would be more appropriate
#
[tantek]
and it applies to more than just microformats, but rather anyone who is posting labels as responses to issues
#
[tantek]
anyway, give it some thought. where did you go to look for "how to create useful labels" if you did?
#
[tantek]
have you ever created a set of labels for one of your own projects to help make sense of and progress on issues?
#
GWG
For me, I always go for short labels, and explain them in the description.
#
GWG
But I may look to see what others have pondered
#
[tantek]
short / memorable is a good criteria I agree.
#
[tantek]
maybe the IndieWeb /naming page is one place that could make sense, since naming labels is a special kind of naming
#
[tantek]
anyway, keep thinking about both (your own methodology for making new labels) and where would be a good place to document such methodologies
