tantek cwebber2: I've been tangentially curious about (and experimented with) how to build federated "spaces" / "worlds" like that ever since reading Snowcrash ~1992. I was hopeful then disappointed by Secondlife's attempt since the protocols/formats were never quite open, and there was never any federation with other implementations/orgs.
