#
csarven
That service scares me.
#
puckipedia
csarven: if you look it's just a git init of a Mastodon source repo
#
saranix
I love how they have their own dashboard and act like it's their own network but then the counts are all from the whole of statusnet or whatever
#
csarven
am aware
#
csarven
it is why i shared here
#
csarven
the scary bit is that it blocks some countries

I find the total lack of mentions of "Mastodon" in that site... intriguing
#
tantek
hello #social!
#
tantek
checks logs
#
tantek
wait there's another Mastodon fork / deployment that does not mention it at all?!?
#
tantek
saranix++ for the meaning of "protocol" :)

Hey tantek!
#
fr33domlover
Aw that's sad
#
tantek
greetings fr33domlover!
#
tantek
what sad?
#
fr33domlover
It's like ubuntu had this thing (or still has?) where it doesn't mention at all that it's a GNU/Linux distro
#
tantek
seriously?
#
fr33domlover
tantek, that people base their work on some existing huge work and intentionally not mention it
#
fr33domlover
tantek, probably because they want popularity etc. and it matters to them the most
#
tantek
popularity, notoriety, fame, funding, ICOs ...
#
fr33domlover
they probably think "GNU" and "linux" are nerd words that scare people etc.
#
tantek
(but they are lol)
#
fr33domlover
tantek, i guess they often are, but, i think one ought to be proud of the stuff their work is based on
#
fr33domlover
otherwise it's... idk has a sour taste to it
#
tantek
agreed with citing sources / inspirations
#
tantek
IMO it only strengthens a product / project to make lineage / history more obvious
#
tantek
but then I'm a citation kinda guy
#
fr33domlover
I think the story of how something came to be is important
#
fr33domlover
When people are proud of the history and connected to it, they're proud to share it
#
fr33domlover
When they hide that detail, usually something there stinks
#
tantek
fr33domlover: you saw this right? https://indieweb.org/Hiveway
#
fr33domlover
tantek, nope haven't seen it before
#
fr33domlover
I guess software freedom and the open world bring some tempting chances for cheap glory and money
#
fr33domlover
It's like those Librem guys
#
fr33domlover
They made a laptop that fully works with free software (not including the boot firmare) - which is nothing new or special - but they made it sound special and tons of people gave them crowdfunding money
#
fr33domlover
For nothing, they just put a sticker on a laptop and a "rebranded" GNU/Linux distro that's all
#
fr33domlover
That's such a waste, those people's money should have gone to projects like GNU and Linux etc. which do the actual work
#
tantek
fr33domlover: that's why I documented it. because this kind of nonsense is starting to happen and without documenting the incidents it will be harder to show an (anti-)pattern to avoid
#
fr33domlover
tantek, good idea
#
tantek
there surprisingly little mention of Hiveway in US/English press (got a bunch of Japanese coverage for some reason)
#
tantek
otherwise I would have started a Wikipedia stub
#
tantek
also made sure to archive as many of the link / tweets etc. I could (internet archive), for future citation

So... meeting went pretty ok, all things considered. There was one guy who, when I brought up issues of privacy and consumer consent and such kept interjecting "privacy is dead a long time ago!" and laughing, and unfortunately getting many sheeple to laugh along with him. How do you folks deal with such people?
#
tantek
saranix, congrats and wow
#
melody
countersocial has been around for a while, i'm actually sorta surprised this is the first most folks here have heard about it, i was aware of it some months before i even joined this group
#
tantek
depends on how charitable a mood I'm in
#
tantek
if I'm in a sarcastic mood I might say something like "white male privilege is pretty awesome isn't it? to not have to worry about privacy being dead" (as I assume the guy interjecting is a white male - correct me if I'm mistaken)
#
tantek
if I'm in a more charitable mood I might respond with some more positive rhetorical questions
